AI-Enabled Chat Tools Improve Communication, But Could Impact Social Dynamics, Says Cornell Study
A recent study by Cornell University reveals that people tend to have more positive conversations and perceive each other positively when using AI-enabled chat tools.
The research, published in Scientific Reports, studied the impact of AI on the way people interact with each other.
The study found that smart replies generated by AI increased communication efficiency, positive emotional language, and positive evaluations by communication partners.
However, the study also found that participants who thought their partners were using AI-generated responses perceived them as less cooperative and felt less affiliated towards them. The study suggests that integrating AI in social contexts could have unintended consequences on social dynamics and people’s interactions, language, and perceptions of each other.
These findings highlight the need for technology companies to consider the social dimension of AI tools, rather than just their utility in accomplishing tasks. The study was supported by the National Science Foundation.
