Exciting news for rail travelers! Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service to San Clemente has returned as of July 17, 2023, following a temporary closure due to debris and land erosion caused by damage from rising surf. The LOSSAN rail corridor, spanning 351 miles from San Diego to San Luis Obispo, accommodates various train services, including the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, freight, commuter, and long-distance trains.

Ongoing construction projects along the corridor play a vital role in maintaining the infrastructure and improving rail travel. However, larger projects occasionally require temporary closures of tracks or stations to facilitate necessary work, resulting in temporary disruptions to train service.

In the case of the closure in San Clemente, Metrolink and OCTA staff went above and beyond to construct a temporary barrier wall to protect the tracks and passing trains from debris falling from the hillside above. These extraordinary efforts ensure the continued safe operation of rail services.

Earlier this year, the Metrolink Board of Directors approved a contract with geotechnical firm Condon-Johnson & Associates Inc. to build and install a temporary barrier wall situated to the north of the San Clemente Pier. This construction, located at the bottom of the slope, aims to safeguard the railroad track and the OCTA-owned right of way from any further falling debris.

While an exact timeline for the completion of the barrier wall and the resumption of passenger rail service has not been determined, the teams involved are working diligently to expedite the process while prioritizing safety. Further updates on the construction progress and service resumption will be provided in the coming weeks.
