Cinespace selected through Request for Proposal Process to develop PortsToronto’s Second Marine Terminal Building

TORONTO /PRNewswire/ — Cinespace Studios (Cinespace), a global platform of production facilities, announced today the expansion of its Marine Terminal Studio Hub with the signing of a second long-term lease with PortsToronto. The lease comes at the conclusion of an open, multi-year Request for Interest (RFI) process and a subsequent Request for Proposal process that commenced in 2019. Located in Toronto’s Port Lands, the redevelopment of Marine Terminal 52 will create three production stages and support spaces totaling 130,000 square feet to welcome world-class productions in 2023. Global architecture, design and planning firm Gensler has been selected to design the studio.

Cinespace is the largest studio facility in Toronto with 1.3 million square feet of production space totaling 25 stages over three sites. This upcoming expansion in the heart of the city’s Studio District follows Cinespace’s successful development of Marine Terminal 51, which currently hosts Netflix’s production hub and was recently the home to Guillermo Del Toro’s Nightmare Alley. The redevelopment of the site will create over 300 new jobs in Toronto and continues to support the infrastructure in Ontario that generates more than 48,000 jobs per year and $2.88B in direct spend.

“We are proud to continue our investment in Toronto that started over 30 years ago. It’s a privilege to partner with PortsToronto again and be selected to develop Terminal 52 into a second facility that will meet the increased demand for production infrastructure,” said Ashley Rice, President and Co-Managing Partner, Cinespace Studios. “The Marine Terminal Studio Hub is an integral part of the Port Lands’ revitalization and its future as a creative center for the city and the province.”

“Our goal for this development was to identify opportunities to develop the existing land and deliver maximum benefit in the area, including greater support for the growing employment district that has emerged in the Port Lands. Cinespace Studios’ development allow for the area to remain consistent with the activities of a successful and operational port, as this remains PortsToronto’s single priority in the area given the economic impact of the port for both commercial shipping and cruise ship operations,” said RJ Steenstra, President and Chief Executive Officer, PortsToronto.

The Honourable Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario commented: “Ontario is open for business, and with the ongoing commitment of key players like Cinespace Studios, our economy will continue to grow. Last year, Ontario saw $2.88 billion spent on production here in the province, which was the highest amount in our history. Going forward, we remain fully committed to growing the industry and creating the conditions for thousands more production jobs to be filled by Ontario’s skilled workers.”

Mayor John Tory, City of Toronto continued: “The film and television production industry in Toronto is important to the local economy, the creation of jobs, and the culture of our city. I am pleased that PortsToronto and Cinespace will be expanding their already successful infrastructure in the Port Lands by creating a second studio space for productions to use. Toronto’s screen industries have experienced a period of significant growth and investment over the last decade, and we know that there has been a real need for even more studio space. This project will not only help us attract more projects and more people to our city but as a result add more jobs which is good for our city and good for the economy.”

Toronto City Councillor Paula Fletcher, said: “I have long been an advocate for the importance of this industry and the associated benefits that come from having a strong media and cultural sector in the City of Toronto. The partnership between PortsToronto and Cinespace has already yielded a successful studio in the former Marine Terminal 51, that has since become a hub for Netflix. I look forward to the development of a second studio space in the Marine Terminal 52, and the related streetscape improvements, economic impacts, and jobs that result from investment in this important industry.”

In this action-packed episode, we bring you a thrilling recap of the week’s most exciting news stories from the realms of space exploration, high-speed rail, transit safety, and entertainment. Join us as we delve into the latest updates and achievements in these fascinating areas.

  1. Space Milestones:
The week witnessed significant milestones in space exploration. Boeing successfully launched their Starliner spacecraft, carrying NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the International Space Station. This marks a momentous step forward in the validation of Boeing’s crew transportation system. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson expressed his overwhelming excitement, emphasizing that Boeing’s Starliner heralds a new chapter in American exploration. https://stmdailynews.com/liftoff-nasa-astronauts-pilot-first-starliner-crewed-test-to-station/

Simultaneously, SpaceX’s Starship rocket achieved a mostly reusable status, reaching impressive heights. Despite a few challenges faced during the mission, including an unplanned roll of the upper stage and engine shutdowns, SpaceX has identified the issues and is diligently working on enhancements for future flights. Elon Musk even teased a remarkable milestone for Flight 5 – catching the Super Heavy Booster using the launch tower’s “chopsticks.” These developments underline the remarkable progress being made in the world of space travel. https://stmdailynews.com/spacex-aims-for-stellar-reentry-ensuring-safety-of-starship-megarocket-for-a-successful-launch/

  1. High-Speed Rail Progress:
The world of high-speed rail has also witnessed exciting advancements. In California, the ambitious California High-Speed Rail project has reached several critical milestones. Since 2015, over 13,000 construction jobs have been created, with the majority going to residents of California’s Central Valley. These jobs have injected economic vitality into communities across the region. Furthermore, the San Joaquin River Viaduct, a major construction project, is nearing completion, ready to accommodate high-speed trains. Although there is still work to be done and the project requires federal support to complete the system, California is at the forefront of developing high-speed and regional rail. https://stmdailynews.com/putting-jobs-first-california-high-speed-rail-crosses-13000-construction-jobs-milestone/

Meanwhile, Brightline West has embarked on constructing America’s first true high-speed rail system, connecting Las Vegas to Southern California. This monumental project covers a distance of 218 miles and will feature fully electric, zero-emission trains capable of reaching speeds of 200 miles per hour. With significant funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, this project exemplifies the commitment to investing in sustainable transportation solutions. The groundbreaking event garnered attention from esteemed officials and public figures, emphasizing the significance of this project. https://stmdailynews.com/connecting-las-vegas-to-southern-california-brightline-west-breaks-ground-on-americas-first-high-speed-rail-project/

  1. Transit Safety:
Switching gears to transit safety, recent concerns in Los Angeles have prompted city leaders to address escalating violence on buses and trains. To tackle these issues, a surge in law enforcement personnel has been announced. However, there is a debate on the effectiveness of relying solely on armed officers. While violent crime rates have decreased, crimes such as trespassing and drug use have increased. Transit advocates propose alternative solutions, including the increased use of unarmed transit ambassadors and community-based programs addressing the root causes of crime. Striking the right balance between addressing public perception and tackling actual crime statistics is imperative in confronting this complex issue. https://stmdailynews.com/exploring-the-debate-is-a-policing-surge-the-answer-to-l-a-s-transit-safety-concerns/

The anticipation builds as the indie feature film ‘INHERITANCE’, directed by Emily Moss Wilson, prepares for its world premiere at the renowned Dances With Films festival. With a compelling screenplay penned by Rachel Noll James, this female-driven drama boasts stellar performances by Austin Highsmith Garces and Rachel Noll James themselves, as the two sisters at the core of the story. Produced by a dynamic team including Sienna Beckman, Noll James, Highsmith Garces, and Moss Wilson, ‘INHERITANCE’ promises to leave an indelible mark on the audience.

Setting the stage for the festival, ‘INHERITANCE’ will open the feature competition at Dances With Films on Friday, June 21, at 7:15 PM in the TCL Chinese 6 Theater. This momentous occasion will be further elevated by the presence of the director, cast, and crew, who will participate in a Q&A session, providing a unique insight into the film’s creation.

‘INHERITANCE’ expertly navigates the emotionally charged journey of two estranged sisters, who find themselves reunited following the passing of their father. As they confront buried family secrets, their paths toward forgiveness and self-discovery take unexpected turns. The ensemble cast is bolstered by notable actresses Michelle Hurd and Cynthia Geary, along with Wes Brown, Chris Mulkey, and Brian McNamara, who deliver compelling supporting performances.

The arduous path to bring ‘INHERITANCE’ to the big screen spans a decade, with director Emily Moss Wilson, writer Rachel Noll James, and actress Austin Highsmith Garces facing significant obstacles. One particularly daunting challenge was the industry-wide work stoppage, the largest in over 60 years. Nevertheless, their unwavering commitment paved the way for ‘INHERITANCE’ to proceed, as they secured an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA just weeks before production was set to begin on Bainbridge Island, WA.

“The work stoppage shed a bright light on the importance of indie film within our industry,” emphasized director Emily Moss Wilson, recognizing the resilience of independent filmmaking.

Reflecting on the tumultuous journey, writer and actress Rachel Noll James added, “The timing of this production turned out to be a blessing, attracting a stellar supporting cast that elevated the film’s depth and impact.”

In its essence, ‘INHERITANCE’ serves as a testament to the power of women supporting women, the strength of perseverance, and the unyielding spirit of independent filmmaking. It represents the second narrative feature from Emergence Films, a US and UK-based production company with a strong focus on empowering female voices, co-founded by Rachel Noll James and Sienna Beckman.
