Metallic Object Crashes into NJ Home, Believed to be Meteorite
A metallic object believed to be a meteorite crashed into a New Jersey home, leaving a hole in the roof and damaging the floor.
On May 9, 2023, a metallic object crashed through the roof of a home in Hopewell Township, New Jersey. The object, believed to be a meteorite, measures about 4 by 6 inches and weighs approximately four pounds. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and there was no significant damage to the residence. The family plans to meet with an astrophysicist to further examine the object.
Despite the initial shock of the incident, the family seems to be taking it all in stride. Suzy Kop, who owns the home, said they initially thought someone had thrown a rock into an upstairs bedroom, but soon realized that wasn’t the case. “We are thinking it’s a meteorite, came through here, hit the floor here because that’s completely damaged, it ricocheted up to this part of the ceiling, and then finally rested on the floor there,” Kop said.
Hazmat officials responded to the home to check for any potential radioactive material, but all checks were negative. The family is now awaiting further analysis from an astrophysicist to confirm that the object is indeed a meteorite.
While meteorite strikes are relatively rare, they do happen. In fact, just last year, a meteorite fell to Earth in Indonesia, causing a massive explosion. And in 2013, a meteorite struck Chelyabinsk, Russia, injuring over 1,000 people.
