Phoenix Church Set to be Transformed into Apartments Despite Community Opposition: What Happens Next?

Published

on

According to a report by 3TV/CBS 5, the Mercy Hill Church in downtown Phoenix is set to be transformed into a 122-unit apartment complex. The 80-year-old building is under contract to be sold to developers, and the profits from the sale would go towards building a new church elsewhere. While the project has the full approval of the city, some members of the community oppose the plan.

The church requires extensive restoration work, costing an estimated 2 to 4 million dolors. Pastor Med Skeens, who has been with the church for the past six years, believes that selling the two and a half acres of land is the right decision to get out of a financially burdensome situation. However, Beatrice Moore, the director of the Grand Avenue Arts and Preservation, opposes the development, arguing that it does not fit in with the neighborhood.

The sale of the church is currently in escrow, and there is no set date for when the sale will be completed. Despite this, Mercy Hill Church plans to eventually build a new building on land they already own.
