Phoenix’s public transportation system reached a significant milestone with the grand opening of the newest stretch of light rail this past Saturday. The $401 million, 1.6-mile extension, featuring three new stations, seven public art installations, and several innovative features, drew crowds of eager riders and dignitaries to celebrate the occasion.

The extension running along 19th Avenue and over Interstate 17 boasts several firsts for the Valley’s public transportation system, including Valley Metro’s first elevated station and rail-only bridge, as well as the rail’s first structured parking lot—a four-story park-and-ride garage adjacent to the new Thelda Williams Transit Center.

Valley Metro CEO Jessica Mefford-Miller highlighted the significance of the Thelda Williams Transit Center, emphasizing its role as a multimodal transit center serving light rail, city buses, and eventually rapid-transit buses and paratransit. The extension is expected to attract 3,000 new daily commuters, connecting riders from across the East Valley to northwest Phoenix’s upcoming Metrocenter area.

Mayor Kate Gallego expressed her excitement about the extension, emphasizing its impact on accessibility to jobs, downtown, Sky Harbor, and attractions such as Castles and Coasters. The project, funded by the voter-approved Phoenix Transportation 2050 plan and regional Proposition 400, also received substantial support from the Federal Transit Administration, with nearly 50% of the funding coming from a $158 million capital investment grant.

During the opening event, the late Phoenix City Councilmember Thelda Williams, after whom the new transit center is named, was honored for her dedication to the light rail project. Attendees enjoyed various activities and refreshments, including free face painting, snacks, water, and food trucks offering an array of fresh-made foods.

The grand opening culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by the inaugural ride on the new rail, marking the extension’s official opening to the public.

The newest light rail extension represents a significant step forward for Phoenix’s public transportation system, offering enhanced connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike. With its innovative features, art installations, and seamless integration with other modes of transit, the extension is poised to make a lasting impact on the city’s transportation landscape.
