A recent report highlights the escalating homelessness crisis in Arizona, with the number of homeless individuals rising for the seventh consecutive year. Shockingly, 54% of the homeless population in the state is forced to sleep on the streets. In response to this dire situation, Flagstaff Shelter Services is making a significant impact by offering a special homeless shelter that not only provides a warm place to stay but also empowers individuals with resources to secure permanent housing.
The Crown Motel: A Shelter with a Purpose:
Located off Route 66 in Flagstaff, the Crown Motel has transformed its purpose from catering to vacationers to serving as a sanctuary for the homeless. This innovative approach ensures that those experiencing homelessness have a safe refuge and access to essential support services aimed at facilitating their transition into stable housing.
A Beacon of Hope for Families:
Michael Detra and his family, who relocated from Ireland to pursue the American dream, encountered adversity in Flagstaff due to the city’s high cost of living. Struggling to make ends meet, they found their last glimmer of hope at the Crown Motel. Since November, the Crown has been their lifeline, offering vital resources and bringing happiness back into their children’s lives.
Flagstaff Shelter Services: A Pathway to Permanent Housing:
Ross Schaefer, the executive director of Flagstaff Shelter Services, emphasizes their mission to provide resources that empower individuals to overcome homelessness. Recognizing that housing affordability remains a challenge, the organization is committed to offering opportunities for people to secure their own living spaces. Since opening, the shelter has witnessed an impressive 30% of its residents self-resolving their homelessness.
Beyond Shelter: Restoring the Meaning of Home:
Flagstaff Shelter Services extends its impact beyond providing shelter by helping families find permanent homes. Notably, they successfully placed two families into homes just in time for the holiday season. Striving to ensure that every individual has a place to call their own, the organization believes that everyone deserves the dignity of a secure and stable home.
A Cycle of Compassion:
Michael Detra’s gratitude has inspired him to pay it forward. As he pursues his American dream, he envisions returning one day to support an organization like Flagstaff Shelter Services, extending a helping hand to others in need. His experience epitomizes the shelter’s philosophy of lifting others up and fostering a cycle of compassion and support.
Expanding Hope: Future Plans:
Flagstaff Shelter Services continues to expand its impact by opening another motel-turned-shelter in early 2024. This expansion will result in the creation of 103 additional units, providing much-needed accommodation for individuals and families in need.
Flagstaff Shelter Services and the Crown Motel exemplify the transformative power of compassion and dedicated support in addressing homelessness. By providing warmth, resources, and a pathway to permanent housing, they are rekindling hope and restoring dignity, one life at a time.
