Hey there, I’m Rod, on my YouTube page I go by Railfan Rod because I am a transportation enthusiast with a deep-rooted fascination mostly for trains, plus some planes, and automobiles. Growing up in Los Angeles, I witnessed the aftermath of the decline and subsequent resurrection of our city’s mass transit system. I’m launching a new podcast series and a new section about urbanism in our news-blog Daily News to share my personal experiences and reflections on the opposition to mass transit in America and talk with fellow enthusiasts and experts on the subject.

The Growing Mass Transit Consciousness:
It’s encouraging to see a shift in public sentiment toward embracing mass transit as a viable alternative to driving or flying. People are increasingly recognizing the need for sustainable transportation options and exploring ways to alleviate congestion on our roads. As a proponent of mass transit, I believe that diversifying our transportation choices is crucial for building a more efficient and eco-friendly future.

Reminiscing on the Past:
I vividly remember the controversy surrounding the proposal to reintroduce a Metro system in Los Angeles during the 70s. That was during the time the city was grappling with both severe traffic congestion and chocking smog. The visionary leadership of Tom Bradley, Los Angeles’ first African-American mayor, sparked hope for a transformed and cosmopolitan city. Plans were underway to revitalize downtown LA into a bustling center of commerce, accompanied by the introduction of a comprehensive rail network comprising light rail, subways, and improved bus services.

Opposition and the Freeway Dilemma:
Unfortunately, these proposals faced opposition, with some advocating for a continued focus on expanding freeways. However, relying solely on freeways could not alleviate our transportation challenges. Embracing mass transit offers numerous benefits, including enhanced accessibility, reduced congestion, and a cleaner environment. It is crucial to open up dialogue and dispel misconceptions surrounding mass transit to foster a more informed and supportive public.

My Passion for Transit and Advocacy:
From an early age, my love for transportation was evident. I have fond memories of playing with my toy cars, dreaming of a world where trains, planes, and automobiles coexist seamlessly. Living near lines that served the Port of Los Angeles further fueled my passion for mass transit. Though Los Angeles had replaced its old trolley system with buses, remnants of the past remind us of the potential that lies within a comprehensive transit network.

Exploring Sustainable Living and Urban Planning:
As an urbanist now living in a suburban environment, I longer find an intrinsic connection between sustainable living and mass transit. Through my new web series and blog, I aim to explore this intersection, discussing the benefits of being an urbanist and advocating for mass transit. Additionally, I will delve into the concept of livable communities that go beyond single-family homes, taking inspiration from the diverse and walkable neighborhoods of my youth.

The opposition to mass transit in America stems from various factors, including differing priorities and concerns about feasibility. However, with a growing mass transit consciousness, we have the opportunity to reshape our transportation landscape. By embracing diverse transportation options and promoting mixed architecture, we can create vibrant, sustainable communities for the future. Let’s continue advocating for mass transit, as it holds the key to a more connected, accessible, and environmentally conscious America.
