Virgin Galactic Milestone

On January 26, 2024, Virgin Galactic achieved another milestone with the successful completion of its first suborbital mission of the year, Galactic 06. The VSS Unity spaceplane, carried aloft by the VMS Eve mothership aircraft, took flight from Spaceport America in New Mexico at noon Eastern time. This mission held particular significance as it marked a crucial step towards the company’s transition to its next-generation Delta-class of suborbital vehicles.

During the 45-minute flight, Unity reached a peak altitude of 88.8 kilometers before gracefully gliding back to a runway landing at the spaceport at 12:56 p.m. Eastern. Notably, Galactic 06 carried four private astronauts for the first time, expanding on the previous capacity of three customers. The identities of the astronauts—Americans Neil Kornswiet and Robie Vaughn, Ukrainian-American Lina Borozdina, and Austrian Franz Haider—were disclosed after the mission.

Virgin Galactic’s decision not to provide a live webcast of the launch, opting for social media updates instead, raised eyebrows. The real-time updates lagged considerably behind the actual flight activities, with the announcement of Unity’s landing appearing over 35 minutes after the fact.

Michael Colglazier, Virgin Galactic’s Chief Executive, expressed confidence in the success of Galactic 06, emphasizing its positive impact on the repeatability of their product and the ability to deliver an exceptional experience to customers. This sentiment aligns with the company’s strategic move to wind down flights of VSS Unity after Galactic 08, redirecting resources toward the development of the Delta-class suborbital vehicles.

The decision to retire Unity stems from Virgin Galactic’s commitment to enhancing flight frequency and reducing costs with the Delta-class ships. The company plans to conduct Galactic 07 in the second quarter of the year, featuring a researcher alongside private astronauts, but details about the mission remain undisclosed.

With the production of the next-generation Delta-class ships underway, Virgin Galactic looks ahead to expanding flight capacity, expecting testing to commence next year and commercial service to launch in 2026. Galactic 06 stands as a pivotal moment, not only showcasing the ongoing success of Virgin Galactic’s commercial spaceflights but also signaling a strategic shift towards the future of suborbital travel.
