Valley Metro’s Northwest Phoenix Light Rail Extension Debuts Ahead of Schedule
Valley Metro’s northwest Phoenix light rail extension debuts ahead of schedule, providing improved transportation options and connectivity in the region.
Valley Metro’s northwest Phoenix light rail extension project is set to debut in late January, two years ahead of schedule. This 1.6-mile extension will enhance transportation options for Phoenicians, connecting them to various areas in the city.

The project includes the addition of light rail stations at 25th and Dunlap avenues, Mountain View Road and 25th Avenue, and at the former site of Metrocenter Mall, which is undergoing redevelopment. The Metrocenter stop, Valley Metro’s first elevated rail station, will feature trains traveling over the freeway on a rail-only bridge. A transit center at the Metrocenter location, named after the late councilwoman Thelda Williams, will offer a four-story park-and-ride garage and public art.
The opening of the Northwest Extension Phase II signifies Valley Metro Rail’s commitment to providing high-quality public transit and multi-modal connectivity in the region. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego emphasizes the need for reliable and affordable transportation options as the city continues to grow.
Construction on the second phase began in 2020, four years after the completion of Phase I, which extended light rail service north on 19th Avenue to Dunlap Avenue. Both phases progressed at a similar timeline of four years. Funding for the project comes from Phoenix Transportation 2050, Proposition 400, and federal grants.
With the early completion of this extension, Phoenicians can look forward to improved accessibility and the convenience of commuting without relying solely on cars. The additional light rail stations and the development of the Metrocenter area will contribute to the city’s transportation infrastructure and support its vision for a more connected and sustainable future.
