Watts Towers: Iconic Art in Los Angeles

The Watts Towers in Los Angeles stand as a testament to the creativity and perseverance of artist Sabato Rodia. Built over 33 years from 1921 to 1954, these 17 interconnected towers and sculptural structures showcase Rodia’s unique vision. Standing at a height of 99.5 feet, the towers have become an iconic symbol of outsider art and Italian-American naïve art.

Designated as a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark in 1990, the Watts Towers hold immense cultural significance. They are also a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and one of the nine folk art sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places in Los Angeles.

The influence of the Watts Towers extends beyond the realm of art and architecture. They have been referenced in literature, including Charles Mingus’ autobiography and Don DeLillo’s novel “Underworld.” Filmmakers have also captured their grandeur, with appearances in movies such as “La La Land” and “Ricochet.”

In addition to their artistic value, the Watts Towers are surrounded by the Watts Towers Crescent Greenway, a rail-with-trail bike-pedestrian path. This .2 mile-long path provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the towers while enjoying outdoor recreation.

The Watts Towers truly embody the spirit of human creativity and serve as a reminder of the power of artistic expression.
