Enhanced Metrolink service on Antelope Valley Line: improved regional transit options.
Last Updated on July 4, 2024 by Daily News Staff
Metrolink, Southern California’s premier regional rail service, has provided enhanced transportation options for commuters and residents along the Antelope Valley (AV) Line. With the support of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), Metrolin doubled its weekend trains and introducing additional weekday services. This expansion coincided with the opening of the new Vista Canyon Station, marking a significant milestone in the development of a multi-modal regional transit center. These improvements aimed to meet the evolving needs of passengers, improve accessibility, and paved the way for future enhancements to the entire Metrolink system.
Increased Service and Connectivity:
Starting from October 23rd, the AV Line witnessed a significant increase in its service frequency. A total of nine new trains have been added to the weekday and weekend schedule, thereby doubling the number of weekend trains available between Los Angeles and Lancaster. This expansion was made possible by an increase of $1.6 million in funding approved by the Metro Board. With this expansion, the AV Line will now offer the second-highest number of trains among all Metrolink service lines, providing passengers with greater flexibility and options.
The Importance of Vista Canyon Station:
The opening of Vista Canyon Station, located in the City of Santa Clarita, is a crucial milestone in the expansion of the Metrolink network. This new station, part of a multi-modal regional transit center, further enhances accessibility and connectivity for commuters. With Vista Canyon Station becoming Metrolink’s 67th station, the reach of the rail service extends across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and San Diego counties. The station’s strategic location serves as a catalyst for economic development and reinforces Metrolink’s commitment to providing efficient transportation solutions.
Benefits for Riders and Communities:
The expanded AV Line schedule brings numerous benefits to both commuters and the communities it serves. The increased weekday and weekend service accommodates shifting demands and provides passengers with more travel options outside traditional commuter hours. This enhanced schedule is particularly advantageous for individuals attending sporting and entertainment events in Los Angeles. By offering improved transit flexibility and convenience, Metrolink aims to attract new riders and increase overall ridership on the AV Line.
Acknowledgements and Future Prospects:
LA County Board Supervisor Kathryn Barger, a member of both the Metro and Metrolink boards of directors, expresses her excitement about the initiative to restore and improve Antelope Valley Line service. The support of Metro and the collaborative efforts of various county transportation agencies have been instrumental in making this expansion possible. Metrolink CEO Darren Kettle highlights the significance of this development, stating that the enhanced schedule not only benefits AV Line commuters but also provides a glimpse into what regional passenger rail services could look like across the entire Metrolink system in the near future.
The expanded Metrolink service on the Antelope Valley Line, in conjunction with the opening of Vista Canyon Station, marks a significant step forward in improving transportation options for commuters in Southern California. The increased frequency of trains, along with the added convenience and accessibility, will undoubtedly benefit riders and contribute to the growth and success of the Antelope Valley and Santa Clarita regions. Metrolink’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and meeting the evolving needs of passengers sets a positive precedent for the future of regional rail services in the area.
