Living a healthy lifestyle is important for our physical and mental well-being, but sometimes it can be overwhelming to know where to start. However, there are simple changes that we can make to our daily routines that can have a big impact on our health and wellness. Here are 10 simple changes you can make today to improve your health and wellness.

  1. Drink more water: Staying hydrated is key for our body’s systems to function properly. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day.
  2. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet: Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients and antioxidants that can help protect against diseases. Aim for at least 5 servings a day.
  3. Move more: Regular exercise is important for maintaining a healthy weight, reducing stress, and improving overall health. Find activities that you enjoy and aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day.
  4. Get enough sleep: Sleep is essential for our body to heal and regenerate. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
  5. Reduce stress: Chronic stress can have negative effects on our physical and mental health. Find activities that help you relax and reduce stress, like meditation or yoga.
  6. Practice good hygiene: Good hygiene practices like washing your hands regularly and showering daily can help prevent the spread of germs and illnesses.
  7. Limit alcohol intake: Drinking too much alcohol can have negative effects on our liver and overall health. Limit your intake to no more than 1-2 drinks per day.
  8. Quit smoking: Smoking is a major cause of many diseases and can have negative effects on our health. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health.
  9. Wear sunscreen: Protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun by wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30, especially when spending time outdoors.
  10. Connect with others: Social connections are important for our mental health and well-being. Make an effort to spend time with friends and family, or find a community group that interests you.

Making these simple changes to your daily routines can have a big impact on your health and wellness. Remember that small steps can lead to big changes. Start with one or two changes and gradually add more as you feel comfortable. With time, these habits will become a natural part of your daily routine, helping you to live a healthier and happier life.

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Offers New Hope for Veterans

New Hope for Veterans

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Offers New Hope for Veterans

(Family Features) For generations, America’s veterans have borne not only the visible scars of battle but also the hidden wounds of war. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, traumatic brain injury and anxiety have long haunted those who served, often with devastating effects on their quality of life and their families. While traditional treatments have helped, many veterans continue to suffer in silence – left behind by a system struggling to meet their needs. However, science is now reopening doors once closed, and therapies previously dismissed are being reconsidered with fresh eyes. Among them are psychedelic-assisted treatments, which have revealed potential in clinical trials to address the most severe mental health conditions afflicting veterans. The FDA’s Role Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved only one psychedelic-based medication: a ketamine nasal spray to treat depression. However, other compounds are gaining the attention of researchers, clinicians and veterans alike. Psilocybin – the active ingredient in “magic mushrooms” – and a drug similar to LSD have both earned FDA “breakthrough therapy” status for their potential to ease depression and anxiety, sometimes after only a single dose. In 2017, MDMA-assisted therapy was identified as a potential breakthrough treatment option for PTSD; ultimately, the FDA declined to grant full approval. This setback underscored not a failure of science, but the complexity of studying powerful compounds under existing regulatory frameworks. For veterans, it was a disappointment, yet it also spotlighted the urgent need for continued research and funding. Veterans and Research at the Forefront One compound has captured national attention: ibogaine, a psychedelic root traditionally used in ceremonies in central and west Africa. Early studies with special-operations veterans have found improvements in PTSD, depression, anxiety and overall functioning – especially for those living with the effects of traumatic brain injury. Recognizing this potential, DAV (Disabled American Veterans) is championing these new approaches. At its 2025 National Convention, the organization hosted a groundbreaking psychedelics roundtable that brought together researchers, veterans, advocates and even a former NFL player to discuss the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapies. The century-old organization supports research into these treatments, pointing out that traditional therapies can fail for as many as 60% of those who try them. It’s also advocating for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to make psychedelic treatments available once they receive FDA approval. “We are experiencing a watershed moment in medical research as psychedelic-assisted therapies have revealed true potential in clinical trials to treat severe mental health conditions,” said Barry Jesinoski, DAV’s National Adjutant. “This glimmer offers veterans contending with not only PTSD but depression, traumatic brain injury, anxiety and more hope in a world where the status quo is failing them.” A New Mission The promising results of these treatments spurred some states to commit funding toward research into psychedelic therapies or conduct legislative hearings to explore their role in advancing this science. The VA is now conducting studies on MDMA and psilocybin. While more research is needed to fully understand their risks, benefits and best applications, for DAV, psychedelic medication represents both hope and responsibility. By advocating for rigorous research and ensuring veterans’ perspectives are central to the conversation, the organization is working to accelerate progress while safeguarding integrity. Whether through psilocybin, MDMA, ibogaine or future discoveries, the mission is clear: fund the research, pursue the science and ensure America’s veterans are given every chance to heal. The Foundation of Healthy Living: Why Now is the Time to Double Down on Leafy Greens

The Foundation of Healthy Living: Why Now is the Time to Double Down on Leafy Greens

(Family Features) As concerns about childhood obesity and chronic disease reach crisis levels, public health experts are urging Americans to eat more fresh produce. For the first time in history, more children worldwide are obese than underweight – a reversal driven largely by diets dominated by ultra-processed foods and a shortage of fresh fruits and vegetables, according to UNICEF. It’s not just an issue impacting children. In the United States, adult obesity rates have hovered at approximately 40% from 2021-2023, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fresh produce in the United States has never been safer with extensive federal requirements for leafy greens. Farmers and produce companies have also taken food safety concerns seriously, investing heavily in prevention, testing and traceability systems. Many farmers and food companies voluntarily comply with industry-wide standards. For example, in California, the Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement (LGMA) sets measurable and verifiable standards for the produce industry, further enhancing food safety. The numbers tell a compelling story about both safety and benefits. Americans consume 130 million servings of leafy greens every day, according to the Western Growers Association. Meanwhile, the evidence linking leafy green consumption to better health outcomes continues to mount. Research published in the journal “Neurology” found eating approximately one serving per day of leafy greens was associated with slower cognitive decline – equivalent to being 11 years younger in age. A study by the “Institute for Functional Medicine” discovered diets rich in leafy greens sparked DNA changes that reversed biological aging by up to 3.23 years. The cardiovascular benefits extend beyond mortality reduction. A study published in the “European Journal of Nutrition” found consuming 1.5 cups of leafy greens daily could help prevent heart disease in older adults. As has long been documented in medical literature, consuming more fruits and vegetables is associated with lower mortality rates. “This isn’t just about adding years to your life; it’s about maintaining quality of life and independence as we age. It’s also important to remember that,” said Dr. David Acheson, a medically trained food safety expert who previously served in leadership at both the FDA and USDA. Access to fresh produce has also never been more convenient or varied. From bagged salads and pre-cut vegetables to ready-to-eat fresh cut fruit bowls or vegetable trays, there are countless ways to incorporate healthy foods into diets. These options reduce barriers to healthy eating by eliminating prep time and providing portion-controlled servings that help minimize food waste while making nutritious choices more accessible. This means the real challenge is translating this abundance of fresh produce into better dietary habits and improved public health. In a nation grappling with obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cognitive decline, doubling down on fresh produce isn’t just good advice. It’s a public health imperative. Senate Advances Deal to End Shutdown as ACA Subsidy Debate Intensifies

ACA Subsidy Question: Eight Senate Democrats broke ranks to help end the U.S. government shutdown — progressives are calling for leadership change while the fate of the ACA premium-subsidies now hangs in the balance.

Senate Advances Deal to End Shutdown as ACA Subsidy Debate Intensifies

The recent vote in the Senate to advance a stop-gap spending bill to reopen the government marks a turning point — but also a source of deep tension within the Democratic Party. Eight Senate Democrats broke with their caucus and joined Republicans, enabling the legislation to move forward. Their defection has prompted progressive backlash and raised bigger questions about the fate of ACA premium tax-credits, and whether new leadership in the Democratic Senate ranks is imminent.

The Vote That Shook the Caucus

On November 9–10, 2025, the Senate advanced a funding measure that would end the longest federal shutdown in U.S. history. Eight Democrats (and one independent who caucuses with Democrats) voted with Republicans to get to the 60-vote threshold required under Senate rules.

Those lawmakers include:

  • Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev)

  • Dick Durbin (D-Ill)

  • John Fetterman (D-Pa)

  • Maggie Hassan (D-N.H)

  • Tim Kaine (D-Va)

  • Angus King (I-Me)

  • Jacky Rosen (D-Nev)

  • Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H)

Their main justification: the shutdown was inflicting too much damage on federal workers, food-aid recipients, and other Americans, and this was the best viable route to reopening the government.

Progressive Outrage and Leadership Questions

Progressive Democrats didn’t buy the justification. They argue that by voting to reopen the government without securing a guaranteed extension of the ACA subsidies, these eight senators essentially abandoned a major Democratic policy fight. Many called it a betrayal of working-class Americans who depend on those subsidies.

The vote has also triggered renewed calls for a shake-up in Democratic Senate leadership. Critics of Chuck Schumer argue that under his leadership the party lacked leverage and strategic clarity, allowing moderate-leaning Democrats to break away. Some are publicly saying: if the leader cannot deliver on major priorities like healthcare, why continue in position?

What This Means for the ACA Subsidies

The subsidies at stake are premium tax credits under the ACA that help millions of Americans afford health insurance. With those credits set to expire at the end of the year, the question becomes: will the government extend them, and if so under what terms?

Here are key points:

  • The deal that ended the shutdown did not include the guaranteed extension of those subsidies. Instead, it included only a promise of a vote later (in December) to address the subsidy extension.

  • That promise is weak in the eyes of many Democrats. There is no guarantee the vote will pass in December — Republicans oppose extension without major reforms, and it isn’t clear whether the House will follow.

  • If the subsidies are not extended, millions of Americans could see their insurance premiums rise significantly for 2026 — a politically explosive outcome especially for the Democrats heading into mid-terms.

  • On the flip side, if Democrats regain stronger negotiating power or leadership changes, there may still be hope for a more robust extension or even permanent fix — but that is uncertain and depends on internal party cohesion and bargaining leverage.

The Bigger Picture & Stakes Ahead

The broadcast-surface story is the shutdown. But below the surface are several consequential dynamics:

  • The eight senators’ decision signals that moderate members of the party are willing to prioritize ending the shutdown rather than extract full concessions on healthcare. That may embolden similar splits in other policy fights.

  • Progressive momentum within the party is rising — their anger over the subsidy gambit may feed leadership change, a firmer stance in 2026 campaigns, and internal challenges to the old guard.

  • For consumers and voters, the health-insurance premium question is no abstraction: if subsidies lapse, premiums will spike, especially for moderate-income households. That economic pain can shift electoral dynamics.

  • For the Democrats’ larger messaging, the risk is an identity crisis: if the party is seen as backing away from core promises (like healthcare affordability), it may affect voter trust and turnout.

  • For the policy, even if a vote occurs in December, the fix may be short-term rather than long-term, which leaves the cycle vulnerable to future cliffs unless structural reforms are enacted.

The Wrap Up (For now)

In short: the shutdown deal unlocked relief in the short run, but at the potential cost of longer-term healthcare policy gains. The eight Democrats who crossed the line may be lauded by some for pragmatism, but criticized by many for ceding leverage and failing to protect vital subsidies. Meanwhile, the fight over who leads the party and how bold it remains in 2026 is very much alive.

With the December vote looming, all eyes will be on whether the promise of action on ACA premium credits turns into a reality — or whether the surprise leadership shifts and policy limbo become the new status quo.
