The Regina Food Bank teams up with BMO to fight food insecurity with Canada’s first at-scale choice model food bank – the BMO ASAHTOWIKAMIK Community Food Hub
- BMO ASAHTOWIKAMIK Community Food Hub enables clients to choose food that meets their unique dietetic and cultural needs
REGINA, SK /CNW/ – The Regina Food Bank, in partnership with BMO, will today open Canada’s first at-scale choice model food bank in the heart of downtown Regina – the BMO ASAHTOWIKAMIK Community Food Hub.
The BMO ASAHTOWIKAMIK Community Food Hub operates similarly to a grocery store for registered food bank users, where those accessing the food bank can shop for what they need and accommodate their unique dietary needs.

In 2023, the Regina Food Bank served 66,174 households, which was up 17% year over year. Over 17,000 people were fed every month including 5,400 new Canadians and 2,300 self-identified Indigenous clients.
The $1 million investment from BMO will enable clients to choose food that meets their unique dietetic and cultural needs. The choice model will help reduce barriers and stigma and provide a new tool to fight record food insecurity.
ASAHTOWIKAMIK means “feeding lodge” in Cree. The name was gifted through ceremony by Elder Murray Ironchild of Piapot First Nation to the Regina Food Bank for their new location. ASAHTOWIKAMIK tells us that when we eat and share a meal, we feed ourselves, our relationships, and our community.
“BMO is proud to support Canada’s first at-scale choice model food bank here in Regina,” said June Zimmer, Regional President, Western Canada, BMO Private Wealth. “This donation is making a difference in our community by providing more options and greater food security for those that need it most. Investing in the communities we serve is inspired by BMO’s Purpose, to Boldly Grow the Good in business and life, and our commitment to making progress by eliminating barriers to inclusion.”
The BMO ASAHTOWIKAMIK Community Food Hub opening is the result of an extensive community campaign culminating in this transformative gift, according to Jeff Linner, Chair, Capital Campaign. “Our community has rallied behind our efforts to change forever how a food bank operates. This campaign has illustrated the generosity and spirit of our community. We have shown that with collaboration and big dreams we can create a healthier Regina. We are so grateful.”
According to Linner, the Food Hub is more than food, it is a space to promote and support community health. “Thanks to BMO and our donors, this space will be a hub for programming, including financial and nutritional literacy, and Indigenous-led food sovereignty programming. It will truly allow us to give a hand up to thousands of people in our community.” The Hub is also home to an outdoor community gathering space equipped with a play structure, basketball court, public art, greenery and benches.
The BMO ASAHTOWIKAMIK Community Food Hub will be open to food bank clients on August 16, 2024. It will be a critical tool to help feed over 17,000 people a month, nearly half of which are children.
A media event followed by a community festival and food hub tours will take place on August 15, 2024 at 11am. Media is asked to RSVP to David Froh dfroh@reginafoodbank.ca

4 Ways to Enjoy Fresher Foods at Home
Fresher Foods at Home: Knowing your food was grown from the earth and nurtured by the sun and rain can add a whole new dimension of enjoyment to your meals, which processed foods often can’t replicate. Recipes like these Chicken and Avocado Rollups can be an easy solution for putting fresh foods like avocados on the menu.

4 Ways to Enjoy Fresher Foods at Home
(Feature Impact) Fresh fruits and vegetables add color, nourishment and satisfaction to life. Knowing your food was grown from the earth and nurtured by the sun and rain can add a whole new dimension of enjoyment to your meals, which processed foods often can’t replicate.
However, if you’ve ever bought a cart full of produce with the best intentions – only to watch as half of it goes bad before you’ve managed to use it – you aren’t alone. Eating fresh foods is often easier in your healthy-eating dreams than in reality. With small habit changes, though, you can transform your household into a place where fresh, whole-food ingredients are at the center of your daily routines.
Consider these suggestions from the fresh produce experts at Avocados from Colombia.
Shop with a Plan
Meal-planning before you shop can help ensure every ingredient you buy has a purpose within its shelf life. Instead of picking out fruits and vegetables with vague aspirations of figuring out something to do with them later, you can simply consult your list and remember you need peppers, onions and avocados for that breakfast burrito recipe you want to try.
Pay Attention to Where Food Comes From
The source of your food can make a big difference in its freshness. When produce is grown and harvested with care then shipped quickly to its destination, it preserves quality and simplifies the journey from the farm to your table.
Consider fresh fruits like Avocados from Colombia, which aren’t just grown but raised at high altitude in rich volcanic soil, nourished by mountain rain and harvested by the hands of growers who care about their land and their craft. The fruit reaches U.S. shipping ports in as little as 3-5 days, so you can confidently choose flavorful produce that arrives as fresh as possible from beautiful Colombian orchards.
With two harvest seasons across nine growing regions, fresh Colombian avocados can be enjoyed throughout the entire year, whether you want to serve bright guacamole or dice an avocado as a cool, creamy topping for a warm winter chili.
Use Fresh Ingredients in a Variety of Ways
It’s always easier to use fresh ingredients when you’re brimming with ideas of things to do with them. For instance, avocados can be transformed into guacamole, creamy salad dressing or flavorful sauces; sliced for use in grain bowls, salads or avocado toast; or frozen to blend into smoothies. This also makes it easier to buy produce in bulk or take advantage of sales.
Find Inspiration Online
Recipes like these Chicken and Avocado Rollups can be an easy solution for putting fresh avocados on the menu, offering the type of everyday joy the growers behind Avocados from Colombia hope you taste. Their new “Raised by Colombia” short film puts faces to that idea, following Don Hernando, a grower of 40 harvests, and his granddaughter Camila, who brought the science of growing home. It ends where your avocado does: at a family table, where the grandmother of the house serves it in a kitchen like yours.
