Chicken chow mein is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Making it at home is not only healthier than ordering takeout, but it also allows you to customize the ingredients to your liking. Here’s an easy recipe for homemade chicken chow mein that you can try.
Ingredients:
- 8 oz. chow mein noodles
- 2 chicken breasts, sliced into thin strips
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 cup sliced cabbage
- 1/2 cup sliced carrots
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp minced ginger
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Cook the chow mein noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large wok or skillet, heat the vegetable oil over high heat. Add the chicken and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes, or until cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the onion, red bell pepper, cabbage, and carrots. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, or until the vegetables are slightly softened.
- Add the minced garlic and ginger to the pan and stir-fry for 30 seconds, or until fragrant.
- Return the chicken to the pan and add the soy sauce and oyster sauce. Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes, or until the chicken and vegetables are coated in the sauce.
- Add the cooked chow mein noodles to the pan and toss everything together until well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve immediately, garnished with chopped scallions or sesame seeds if desired.
Tips:
- Feel free to add other vegetables to the dish, such as mushrooms, snow peas, or bean sprouts.
- If you like your chow mein with a bit of heat, add some red pepper flakes or sliced chili peppers to the pan.
- To make this dish vegetarian, substitute the chicken with tofu or seitan.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop before serving.
