Honda Qualifying Sweep at Long Beach: Kyle Kirkwood Claims Career-First NTT INDYCAR SERIES Pole
Honda drivers dominated the qualifying session at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, with Kyle Kirkwood claiming his first career pole position for Andretti Autosport and Marcus Ericsson completing the front row for Chip Ganassi Racing. Honda-powered drivers secured the first five positions in the starting grid, and the second row of the starting field will also be all Honda.
The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is in full swing, and the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach has already provided a thrilling qualifying session. It was a Honda qualifying sweep, with Kyle Kirkwood claiming his first career pole position for Andretti Autosport, and Marcus Ericsson completing the front row for Chip Ganassi Racing.
Honda drivers dominated the qualifying session, claiming the first five positions in the starting grid for Sunday’s race. Romain Grosjean, the 2021 series champion Alex Palou, and six-time series champion Scott Dixon round out the top five positions, ensuring that the second row of the starting field will also be all Honda.
This result marks Honda’s second consecutive street circuit pole of the 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES, with Andretti Autosport drivers Kyle Kirkwood and Romain Grosjean securing the poles at Long Beach and the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, respectively.
Honda-powered drivers and teams have an impressive history at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, winning the race 15 times in 22 appearances. This includes victories in eight of the last 13 races and a seven-year victory streak in Championship Auto Racing Teams competition, against multi-manufacturer competition, from 1996-2002.
The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach will not only feature the NTT INDYCAR SERIES race on Sunday but also the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship race. Acura will field an electrified Acura ARX-06 prototype and an Acura NSX GT3 Evo22 for Gradient Racing.
Television coverage of Sunday’s race starts at 3 p.m. EDT on NBC, and flag-to-flag coverage will also be available on NBC Peacock, the INDYCAR Radio Network, and SiriusXM INDYCAR Nation.
