2023 outlook reveals growing assault on consumer expectations of digital trust and safety

MCLEAN, Va. (Newswire.com) – The Media Trust, the preeminent leader in digital trust and safety for websites and mobile apps, released a report detailing the harms experienced by consumers through their everyday use of websites and mobile apps. When accessing common online environments — news, entertainment, shopping, travel — children and the elderly were increasingly affected by malware, a 3.7X and 11X growth, respectively, throughout 2022.

The report CYA 2023: 7 Digital Safety Trends for Uncertain Times highlights malware and ad-quality challenges facing brands, publishers, and platforms as they navigate consumer-loyalty concerns and the economic uncertainties of 2023. From poor security to inappropriate content, the consumer experience is under attack, which threatens monetization channels including commerce and online advertising.

The report confirms:

  • 4,500+ active attacks targeting millions of consumers each month
  • 1.3 billion malicious ads blocked on Fortune 1000 websites and apps
  • 2.2X growth in e-skimming attacks since 2020
  • 3X increase in just three months of an attack leveraging a particular corrupted JavaScript library
  • 16X rise in backdoors being installed on devices — personal, corporate, government

“Threat actors have greatly improved their ability to get their malicious wares in front of the most vulnerable consumers online,” explained Chris Olson, CEO of The Media Trust. “Every business with a digital channel — website, app, gaming console — needs to be aware of how these assets are used to target and harm your customers. You cannot simply look the other way and leave children and the elderly to fend for themselves. Your family, friends, and neighbors are all being hunted every time they use the internet.”

Unveiling Intolerance: A Teenager’s Struggle and the Call for Accountability

In Utah, a school board member’s social media post led to threats against a teenage girl, sparking condemnation and calls for accountability from state officials.

In a distressing turn of events, a teenage girl in Utah found herself at the center of a maelstrom of controversy when a state school board member, Natalie Cline, appeared to cast doubt on her gender identity through a now-deleted social media post. The implications were stark, with the board member insinuating falsehoods about the student, sparking outrage and condemnation from Utah’s top government officials.

Governor Spencer Cox and Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson swiftly denounced Cline’s actions, emphasizing the need for accountability and highlighting the importance of safeguarding students’ well-being. The Granite School District quickly intervened to protect the student from potential harm, earning praise for their proactive measures.

The heart-wrenching plea from the parents of the young girl shed light on the repercussions of such cyberbullying, underscoring the potential devastating impact on vulnerable individuals. The narrative of the teenager being a tomboy, misconstrued due to outward appearances, serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers of making assumptions based on stereotypes.

Cline’s subsequent invocation of free speech rights in her apology raises broader questions about responsible communication and the line between personal expression and harm. The context of rising anti-LGBTQ legislation adds a layer of complexity to the situation, reflecting broader societal challenges and ongoing battles for equality and acceptance.

This incident also unveils a pattern of behavior from Cline, as highlighted by previous reprimands for controversial social media posts. The recurrence of such incidents underscores the need for robust mechanisms to address misconduct and uphold standards of professionalism, especially in positions of authority.

Ultimately, this saga serves as a clarion call for vigilance, empathy, and the imperative of fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect. It underscores the vital need for accountability, education, and advocacy to combat prejudice and discrimination, ensuring a safer and more supportive environment for all individuals, especially the most vulnerable among us.

Beware: Hackers Exploit Facebook Copyright Notices to Steal Credentials

Discover how hackers are using fake Facebook copyright notices to steal user credentials. Stay vigilant and follow best practices to protect yourself.

Published

In 2023, a surge of Facebook-inspired attacks preyed on users through the site’s Ad Manager service. Spoofed Facebook accounts continue to unleash assaults in the New Year. Avanan researchers have unveiled a new tactic: hackers exploiting Facebook copyright infringement notices to pilfer credentials.

Avanan, a part of the Check Point Company, is a provider of cloud email and collaboration suites as protection from cyber attacks that evade default and advanced security tools.

This is the message that we received on Facebook, this time it’s trademark rights. Mobile phone image.

The attack involves sending fabricated copyright infringement notices via email, aiming to harvest credentials through social engineering and impersonation. The urgent appeal requirement within 24 hours directs users to a credential-harvesting page, not a legitimate Meta website.

These phishing emails capitalize on urgency and believability. They mention the page’s name and employ a seemingly authentic link. The threat of a 24-hour account suspension plays on the vital role of Facebook in business activities, making the appeal seem reasonable.

To counter these threats, users should always scrutinize URLs before clicking and verify sender addresses. Additionally, direct login to the Facebook account to check its status is recommended, rather than clicking on links in such emails.

As these attacks persist, vigilance is crucial. Staying alert and following best practices can fortify defenses against these deceptive tactics.

Breaking the Silence: Celebrating International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia

“Breaking the Silence: Celebrating IDAHOBIT and promoting equality, diversity, and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community. #IDAHOBIT #BreakingTheSilence”

Published

on

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) is observed every year on May 17th to raise awareness about the discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community worldwide. This day was first celebrated in 2005 and has since become an important date in the LGBTQ+ calendar.

Discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community takes many forms, including homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. These terms refer to prejudice, discrimination, and violence directed towards individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer. This discrimination can take many forms, including verbal abuse, physical violence, and even death.

The theme for this year’s IDAHOBIT is “Breaking the Silence”. The theme emphasizes the importance of speaking out against discrimination and violence towards the LGBTQ+ community. It also encourages people to share their stories and experiences to raise awareness and promote understanding.

The LGBTQ+ community faces discrimination and marginalization in many parts of the world. In some countries, homosexuality is still illegal, and LGBTQ+ individuals face imprisonment or even death for being who they are. Even in countries where LGBTQ+ rights are protected by law, discrimination and violence are still rampant.

IDAHOBIT is an opportunity to raise awareness about these issues and to promote equality and acceptance for all. It is a day to celebrate diversity and to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.

One of the most important ways to support the LGBTQ+ community is to educate ourselves about their experiences. We can do this by reading books and articles written by LGBTQ+ authors, watching movies and TV shows that center around LGBTQ+ characters, and attending events and rallies organized by LGBTQ+ groups.

We can also take action to support LGBTQ+ rights. This can include donating to LGBTQ+ charities, volunteering at LGBTQ+ organizations, and speaking out against discrimination and hate speech.

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is an important day for raising awareness about the discrimination and violence faced by the LGBTQ+ community. By breaking the silence and speaking out against discrimination, we can promote equality and acceptance for all. Let’s stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate diversity in all its forms.
