San Francisco-based robotics innovator Armstrong has announced that it has raised $12 million in funding to further its mission of transforming restaurant kitchens with general-purpose robots. Backed by investors including Lerer Hippeau, Bloomberg Beta, Next Play Ventures, Transmedia Capital, and WestWave Capital, the company is already demonstrating how automation can address one of the food service industry’s toughest challenges: dishwashing.

Tackling One of the Hardest Jobs in the Kitchen

Dishwashing remains one of the most difficult restaurant roles to fill and retain. Even with hourly wages reaching $20 in many states, the average dishwasher stays on the job for less than a year. Armstrong’s founders, Axel Hansen and Jonah Varon, who previously sold a company to LinkedIn, are aiming to solve that problem with AI-powered robotsdesigned to handle repetitive, high-turnover work while maintaining speed and reliability.

“Dishwashing is just the start,” said Hansen. “Our vision is a general-purpose robot for restaurant kitchens. The same kinds of robots that wash dishes today will cook, prep, and clean tomorrow.”

Working 24/7 in Real Kitchens

Armstrong’s dishwashing robots are already deployed in one of the nation’s largest full-service restaurant chains, where they run continuously and collectively wash more than one million dishes each year. The robots are designed to integrate easily into existing operations — installing in just a few hours and connecting seamlessly with standard commercial dish machines. Each system runs under a monthly subscription that includes installation, operation, and maintenance.

AI Meets Kitchen Efficiency

Powered by neural networks trained on thousands of hours of real-world dishwashing, the robots use millimeter-level 3D perception to recognize dishes in messy stacks, grasp them with precision, and clean them to commercial standards. Armstrong’s platform is built to be scalable — meaning the same technology could soon handle prep work, cooking, and cleaning tasks, expanding the potential for automation throughout the kitchen.

“Restaurants face enormous labor challenges,” said Gary Kagan, Armstrong’s COO. “By building intelligent, adaptable robots that integrate seamlessly into existing kitchens, we can give operators a way to stay open, efficient, and profitable.”

Building the Kitchen of the Future

As the restaurant industry continues to face staffing shortages, Armstrong’s vision of a general-purpose robotic platformcould redefine how commercial kitchens operate. The company’s long-term goal is to make robots an everyday part of food service — helping staff focus on creativity, customer service, and consistency.
