Remembering Richard Moll: The Gentle Giant from “Night Court”

Richard Moll, the beloved actor known for his role as “Bull” Shannon on the original sitcom “Night Court,” has passed away at the age of 80. Moll’s portrayal of the gentle giant bailiff captivated audiences from 1984 to 1992, earning him a lasting place in television history.

Born in Pasadena, California, Moll initially pursued a career in law enforcement as a deputy probation officer before discovering his passion for acting. He made the courageous decision to follow his dreams and moved to Hollywood in 1968. However, success didn’t come easily, and Moll experienced a decade of ups and downs before finding his breakthrough role on “Night Court.”

As “Bull” Shannon, Moll stole the show with his shaved head, endearing catchphrase, “Ohh-kay,” and a lovable but dim-witted outlook on life. He formed a close bond with his co-star Marsha Warfield, who played Roz Russell, the other bailiff on the show. Together, they created memorable moments that endeared them to fans.

Following the conclusion of “Night Court,” Moll lent his distinctive gravelly voice to various video games and comic book projects, including “Batman: The Animated Series.” He also appeared in horror films such as “Ghost Shark” and “Slay Belles,” showcasing his versatility as an actor.

While Moll did not join the reboot of “Night Court,” his absence was humorously explained in the original finale, where his character was abducted by aliens in need of a tall companion. This creative departure added to the character’s legendary status.
