The Invasion and the Resolution: The Tau Fruit Fly in Southern California
In July 2023, a 79-square-mile quarantine zone was established in Southern California due to the detection of Tau fruit flies. The quarantine ended on June 28, 2024, following successful eradication efforts, while other fruit fly quarantines remain active in California. Community cooperation was crucial.

In July 2023, CDFA and USDA/APHIS established a 79-square-mile quarantine zone in Stevenson Ranch–Santa Clarita Valley, after capturing over 20 Tau fruit flies (Zeugodacus tau)—a serious agricultural threat—with the area bounded by Castaic Junction (north), Oat Mountain (south), Del Valle (west), and Honby Avenue (east) .
Residents were instructed not to transport fruits or vegetables off their property, although they could consume or process produce on-site. Otherwise, produce had to be double-bagged and disposed of in garbage bins . Control measures included fruit inspections, Spinosad treatments, and pheromone-lure traps in the affected zone .

This represented the first-ever Tau fruit fly quarantine in the Western Hemisphere . Fortunately, no further fly detections occurred after December 8, 2023, allowing the quarantine to be officially lifted on June 28, 2024 .
Today, while the Tau fruit fly has been eradicated, four other fruit fly quarantines persist in California. To prevent future invasions:
- Avoid transporting unwarranted produce—especially after travel.
- Stay alert and report sightings of suspicious pests.
- Cooperate with agricultural agencies during inspections or control efforts.
Thanks to swift action and community cooperation, Stevenson Ranch—and the agricultural health of California—remains protected from this invasive pest.
