About Skinwalker Ranch
Skinwalker Ranch, also known as Sherman Ranch, is a 512-acre property located southeast of Ballard, Utah. It is believed to be the site of various paranormal and UFO-related activities. The ranch is named after the skin-walker of Navajo legend, which refers to vengeful shamans.
Background
Reports of UFO sightings in the Uintah Basin became widely known in the 1970s. However, the claims about the famous ranch first surfaced in 1996 through an article published in the Salt Lake City-based newspaper called Deseret News. Investigative journalist George Knapp later wrote a series of articles about the ranch in Las Vegas Mercury, a popular weekly magazine. The reports described the inexplicable and terrifying experiences of a family who had purchased and occupied the property.
The ranch, situated in Uintah County in the western region, adjacent to the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation, gained popularity as the UFO ranch due to its alleged 50-year history of peculiar incidents. Kelleher and Knapp reported nearly 100 occurrences that included mysterious disappearances and mutilations of cattle, sightings of unidentified flying objects or orbs, large animals with red eyes that remained unharmed by gunfire, and invisible objects emitting destructive magnetic fields. Retired US Army Colonel John B. Alexander, involved in the investigation, described the NIDSci effort as a scientific approach to gather solid evidence. However, the investigators acknowledged the challenges they faced in obtaining scientifically publishable evidence.
Cattle mutilations have been part of the folklore of the surrounding area for decades. When Robert Bigelow, founder of the National Institute for Discovery Science, purchased the ranch for $200,000 in 1996, this was reportedly the result of his having been convinced by the stories of mutilations, which included tales of strange lights and unusual impressions made in grass and soil told by the family of former ranch owner Terry Sherman.
