The National Football League (NFL) and Microsoft have officially extended their decade-long partnership, this time doubling down on artificial intelligence. Announced on August 20, 2025, the multiyear agreement will bring Microsoft Copilot, Azure AI, and cloud-powered solutions directly to the sidelines, scouting rooms, and front offices of all 32 NFL clubs.
With over 30 stadiums, 330 annual events, and hundreds of millions of fans worldwide, the NFL is leveraging Microsoft’s AI platforms to transform how games are coached, how operations are run, and even how fans experience football.

AI on the Sidelines: Smarter, Faster Decision-Making
The NFL’s Sideline Viewing System has been upgraded with 2,500+ Microsoft Surface Copilot+ PCs, ensuring that 1,800 players, 1,000 coaches, and staff can access real-time game insights.
New tools built with GitHub Copilot allow coaches and analysts to filter plays by criteria like down and distance, scoring plays, and penalties, breaking down game film in seconds instead of hours.
As Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay put it:
“Microsoft Copilot enhances our efficiency and accuracy by breaking down complex data into digestible insights that can be quickly communicated to our players and help them realize their highest potential.”
Additionally, Microsoft 365 Copilot dashboards in the booth help analysts spot patterns in snap counts, personnel rotations, and defensive coverages — all with the goal of making better, faster, and more strategic decisions during the game.
Beyond Game Day: AI in Operations and Scouting
The NFL is also deploying Microsoft AI far beyond the field.
Game Day Operations Dashboards: Copilot will help track and categorize incidents like weather delays and equipment failures, giving operations managers actionable insights to improve future planning.
Practice and Training: Azure AI video tools are being tested to evaluate player technique, assist in coaching, and support injury assessments.
Scouting Combine: At the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, clubs used a Microsoft Azure AI Foundry app for real-time evaluations of 300+ draft prospects, streamlining scouting reports.
AI in the Front Office and Fan Engagement
The benefits don’t stop with coaches and players. NFL clubs are also exploring AI-driven productivity and strategy tools for business operations:
Draft & Salary Cap Analysis – helping general managers make more informed roster and financial decisions.
Business Operations – applying AI to finance, HR, and event management.
Fan Engagement – teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are already using Copilot for marketing and promotions.
The NFL Players Association is also adopting Microsoft AI in its video review process to improve efficiency and ensure player safety.
A Blueprint for AI Transformation
Bryson Gordon, Microsoft’s Corporate VP of Global Marketing, emphasized that this partnership extends beyond sports:
“Whether you’re preparing for the championship or running a global enterprise, the principles are the same: insights matter, preparation is essential, and the ability to act quickly is critical.”
By weaving AI into every level of the league — from play-calling to payroll — the NFL is positioning itself as a model for how large organizations can embrace technology to improve performance, safety, and engagement.
Final Thoughts
The NFL’s partnership with Microsoft has already reshaped the sidelines with Surface tablets. Now, the leap into AI-powered Copilot and Azure solutions signals an even bigger transformation.
For fans, this could mean a sharper, faster, and more dynamic game. For teams and players, it means smarter decisions, safer play, and deeper insights. And for the NFL as a whole, it’s a future where AI is as much a part of the game as the playbook itself.
