Solo Travel Tips: 7 recommendations for venturing out alone

Published

on

(Family Features) Whether you’re a lone wolf at heart or looking to broaden your sense of independence, traveling solo can be a richly empowering and satisfying experience.

Setting out on your own has many practical advantages. You’re not worrying about accommodating another’s schedule, interest or needs, and you’re free to decide what you want to do and when. Solo travel also elicits some mental and emotional benefits, as you experience a unique sense of freedom, liberation and self-sufficiency.

If you’re considering a solo journey, consider these tips from the book “101+ Tips for Solo Women Travelers,” which is offered by Overseas Adventure Travel in free digital and print editions.

Make Sure Your Passport is Updated

Many countries now require your passport to be valid for six months after your return to the United States. If you don’t have a passport, or need to renew one, apply for one as soon as possible. Ideally you should have your application in six months before you depart.

Look for Trips with No Single Supplement

Often, quoted rates are “per person, based on double occupancy.” This is because travel hosts know they can make more from a couple traveling than an individual. You can avoid paying a single supplement premium by being willing to match with a roommate or traveling with a tour company or cruise line with free or low-cost single supplement fees.

Use the ATM

As an affordable and convenient way to get cash, you can avoid wasting time in line at a bank or currency exchange bureau by visiting an ATM. While you’ll likely incur a fee for using an ATM that’s not part of your bank, it is often less than the commission you’d pay at an exchange bureau. Plus, you can avoid additional fees by calculating how much you’ll need for the trip and making one withdrawal as opposed to multiple smaller withdrawals.

Download Entertainment Before You Leave

When traveling, Wi-Fi can be expensive, slow or just not available. Before you leave, download music, e-books, podcasts, favorite tv shows or movies to enjoy while you’re en route or during down time.

Join Group Tours

Once you reach your destination, you may enjoy joining small groups for excursions or to explore local cuisine. Or you can make your entire journey a group experience. A small group adventure with Overseas Adventure Travel has many benefits, and built-in dining companions is just one of them.

Take Precautions in Your Hotel Room

When you check in, ask the receptionist to write your room number down instead of announcing it so everyone can hear. Make sure your room’s locks work on both the door into the hallway and the balcony. Never let any repair person or staff member into your room without confirming with the front desk first. Bring a rubber doorstop, which makes a hotel room door nearly impossible to open. Finally, have an exit plan: Know where the nearest exit is located and the route from your room.

Make New Friends

For some, making friends seems to happen naturally while traveling alone by chatting with strangers at a neighboring restaurant table or striking up a conversation while waiting in line at a store. If those situations don’t occur naturally, there are useful apps that can connect you with local people as well as fellow travelers.

CELEBRATION, Fla. /PRNewswire/ — Disney Cruise Line revealed the first details about its next ship, the Disney Destiny, as it reached a new construction milestone today with a keel laying ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. With the good luck garnered by this maritime tradition, this ship of legends and lore is beginning to take shape.

Disney Cruise Line revealed the name of its next ship, the Disney Destiny, along with details about its design theme, “Heroes and Villains.” The ship, sister to the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, will draw on the legacy of beloved Disney stories, characters and theme park attractions to forge a cruise vacation that will empower guests to embrace their own calling aboard every unforgettable voyage. The design theme of the Disney Destiny, sister to the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, will be “Heroes and Villains,” drawing on the legacy of beloved Disney stories, characters and theme park attractions, to forge a cruise vacation that will empower guests to embrace their own calling aboard every unforgettable voyage.

The Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering teams were inspired by the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their purpose, when developing the Disney Destiny. Onboard, guests will encounter heroes and villains alike – including those from beloved Walt Disney Animation Studios stories like “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” – within the spaces, experiences and entertainment throughout their voyage.

To embody and embolden the theme, Disney also unveiled brand-new filigree artwork for the bow of the Disney Destiny, continuing a beloved Disney Cruise Line design tradition. The illustration depicts Minnie Mouse striking a valiant pose in a heroic ensemble, her cape waving majestically in the sea breeze as she boldly leads guests toward their vacation destinies.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”

The Disney Destiny is scheduled for delivery in 2025 as part of a multi-year expansion of the Disney Cruise Line fleet that includes the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, the Disney Adventure that will homeport in Singapore, and the new island destination in The Bahamas, Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Exploring the Subtle Beauty of a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

Embrace the subtle beauty of the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse on March 24-25, 2024, as light and shadow converge in the celestial dance above.

Published

on

As the celestial dance continues, the night sky is poised to offer us a mesmerizing astronomical event—the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse on March 24-25, 2024. This eclipse, though subtle in its appearance, bears a unique charm that captivates skywatchers worldwide.

Commencing at 4:53 UTC on March 25, 2024, this penumbral eclipse will reach its peak at 7:12 UTC, showcasing a penumbral magnitude of 0.9577. During this crescendo, the moon will be enveloped in Earth’s outer penumbral shadow, creating a delicate darkened shading across its surface. This phenomenon, while lacking the stark contrast of a total or partial eclipse, promises a sight of understated elegance.

Lasting 279.9 minutes, this eclipse invites us to ponder the intricate interplay of celestial bodies. The moon’s journey through Earth’s penumbral shadow unveils a spectacle where light and shadow merge in a subtle embrace, highlighting the beauty of cosmic alignments.

Despite its gentle nature, the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse holds a special allure for avid sky gazers. The question of its visibility remains a topic of intrigue—some may detect the shadow upon the moon’s immersion in 2/3 of the penumbral shadow, while others may perceive it instantaneously. The experience is shaped by atmospheric conditions, visual acuity, and observational acumen, adding a layer of mystery to this celestial event.

In the grand tapestry of celestial phenomena, the March 25 eclipse stands as a testament to the harmonious movements of the cosmos. Positioned in the constellation of Virgo the Maiden, the moon gracefully traverses Earth’s penumbral shadow, painting a picture of celestial elegance for those who pause to observe.

As we marvel at this lunar spectacle, we are reminded of the interconnectedness of celestial events. The upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, forms part of a larger eclipse season, underscoring the cyclical nature of astronomical occurrences. The juxtaposition of these eclipses offers a glimpse into the intricate rhythms of the cosmos, inviting us to witness the celestial ballet unfolding above.

As we await the next eclipse season in September-October 2024, featuring a partial lunar eclipse and an annular solar eclipse, let us cherish the fleeting moments of cosmic alignment. Each eclipse, whether grand or subtle, serves as a reminder of the vastness and beauty of the universe, beckoning us to gaze skyward and marvel at the wonders above.

In the stillness of the night, under the watchful gaze of the moon, let us embrace the subtlety and grace of the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse, a celestial spectacle that invites us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the mysteries of the cosmos.

What is a Penumbral lunar eclipse?

A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when part or all of the Moon passes into the Earth’s penumbra.[5] No part of the moon is in the Earth’s umbra during this event. The penumbra causes a subtle dimming of the lunar surface, which is only visible to the naked eye when about 70% of the Moon’s diameter has immersed into Earth’s penumbra.[6] A special type of penumbral eclipse is a total penumbral lunar eclipse, during which the entire Moon lies exclusively within Earth’s penumbra. Total penumbral eclipses are rare, and when these occur, the portion of the Moon closest to the umbra may appear slightly darker than the rest of the lunar disk. (wikipedia)
