Discovering the Unnerving Truth: Remembering Bob McDermott
The author reflects on the intertwined losses of Bob McDermott, an actor, and their sister, exploring themes of coincidence, connection, and the fragility of life.
Life is full of uncanny moments that can leave us in awe, prompting us to reflect on the interconnectedness of our experiences. Recently, I stumbled upon one such moment when I found out about the passing of Bob McDermott, an actor who portrayed the lovable Bob Merona on my web series, CUPIC: Diary of an Investigator. Learning of his death nearly a decade later filled me with a blend of nostalgia, shock, and an unsettling realization of how our lives were, quite literally, intertwined during a time of tragedy.
Bob McDermott: A Rhythmic Force of Nature
Bob McDermott was more than just an actor to me—he embodied the very spirit of what CUPIC aimed to capture. His portrayal of Bob Merona brought warmth and levity to an often serious series focused on exploring the unexplained. Bob infused his character with his own life experiences, and his ability to resonate with audiences was one of the many reasons he was so beloved.
Beyond acting, Bob was a man of many talents. He worked at Best Buy in various capacities and later transitioned into running his own pest control business. This versatility exemplified his boundless energy and commitment to crafting his own path, whether it be on-screen or off.
The Unforeseen Loss
It was a jarring revelation to learn that Bob had passed away in 2015, the very same year tragedy struck my life. Just a day before Bob’s untimely death, I was plunged into grief and heartache with the passing of my younger sister on September 27. I had been unaware of Bob’s fate at the time, and it’s haunting how the timing of our losses converged.
As I prepared to resume filming CUPIC in late October, I reached out to Bob to schedule filming. His silence felt unusual, but I chalked it up to his busy schedule—a common occurrence for someone navigating the world of pest control during peak season.
The oddity started gnawing at me, however. As two weeks passed with no word from him, I began to suspect he might not be interested in the project anymore. Eventually, I had to recast the role with another talented actor, John Euber. Little did I know, I was making decisions in a world where the man who had breathed life into Bob Merona was no longer with us.
The Eerie Intersection of Coincidences
Reflecting on the simultaneous losses in my life, I can’t help but feel unnerved by the string of coincidences that unfolded. The intertwining of Bob’s death and my sister’s disappearance from my life produces an unsettling overlap that prompts deeper questions about fate, timing, and the threads that connect us all.
Coincidences like these invite us to ponder the mysteries of our existence. Are they mere accidents, or do they highlight a greater interconnectedness we often overlook? The notion of coexistence—of lives brushing against each other, only to part ways—evokes a raw vulnerability that lingers long after the moment has passed.
A Shared Journey of Discovery
The Central Unidentified Phenomenon Investigation Committee (CUPIC), as depicted in the series, embarked on quests to explore the mysteries of the universe with dedication and fervor. Similarly, Bob’s portrayal of Bob Merona mirrored this quest for truth, showcasing the beauty of the unknown in a way that made viewers question the world around them.
In piecing together the threads of our respective lives, I realize that both Bob and I were on unique journeys filled with the unexplained—a fact that amplifies the eeriness of our shared timeline.
Taking it all in…
As I navigate the maze of memories and emotions surrounding Bob McDermott’s passing, I find myself confronted with the curious intersection of our lives. His unassuming yet profound impact as an actor and friend reminds me that the connections we forge are often integral to our experience of life itself.
Reflecting on Bob’s legacy evokes not only a sense of loss but also a renewed appreciation for the fleeting nature of existence. Life is a series of intricate, beautiful coincidences, and in the wake of sorrow, we learn to cherish the everyday magic that binds us all. Rest in peace, Bob. Your vibrant spirit and unmistakable charm will always remain a part of my journey.

Dozens of cyclists and pedestrians are killed each year in Philly − an injury epidemiologist explains how to better protect bike lanes, slow drivers down and reduce collisions
D. Alex Quistberg, Drexel University
Over 60 pedestrians and cyclists have been killed each year in Philadelphia in recent years.
Compared with other big cities, Philadelphia’s death rate for both pedestrians and cyclists is higher than New York and Chicago but lower than Los Angeles and Houston.
Across the U.S., more pedestrians and bicyclists are killed or seriously injured today than any time over the past 40 years. Over 7,500 pedestrians and over 1,100 bicyclists died in traffic collisions in 2022, the most recent year with available data, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
As an injury epidemiologist in Philadelphia who studies pedestrian and bicyclist injuries in the U.S. and Latin America, I want to share several evidence-based ways that Philadelphia can make walking, biking and getting around the city safer for everyone.
Protect bike lanes
Protected bike lanes have physical barriers that prevent drivers from entering the bike lane to park or pass other drivers.
They are particularly useful on high-volume cycling corridors and offer cyclists much more protection than lanes that are merely painted but have no physical barriers or lanes with flexible posts that can be driven over.
Flexible posts, for example, were unable to block the collision that killed Barbara Friedes, chief pediatric resident at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, in Center City in July 2024 when a drunk driver sped through the bike lane where Friedes was bicycling.
Research suggests protected bike lanes can improve safety for pedestrians and drivers too. This is likely because they tend to cause drivers to slow down.
The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and other local bike safety advocacy groups have called for the city to replace unprotected lanes with protected lanes and also add protected bike lanes to more roadways that currently don’t have any.
In October 2024, the city announced it will install concrete barriers to protect the bike lanes on Spruce and Pine streets in Center City, including where Friedes was killed. That same month, the City Council unanimously passed a “Get Out the Bike Lane” bill that increases the fines for drivers who stop or park in a bike lane.
Slow drivers down
Traffic-calming measures are engineering and road design strategies that slow vehicles down, make pedestrians more visible to motorists and provide safer crossing areas.
They include speed humps, curb extensions and protected intersections, as well as 20 mph speed zones.
Automated speed enforcement, which involves cameras that capture the license plates of drivers who are speeding, has led to major reductions in speeding and serious collisions on Roosevelt Boulevard. The street, which runs through North and northeast Philadelphia, has been named one of most dangerous roads in the country in various analyses by news and transportation organizations. Due to this success, the city plans to expand automated speed enforcement to Broad Street in 2025 and potentially other locations in the future.
Traffic-calming measures can benefit all road users by reducing traffic congestion so drivers and public transit riders face fewer delays. They can also boost nearby businesses by increasing foot traffic and making business corridors more pleasant for shoppers.
Encourage fewer cars on the road
Philadelphia can adopt more policies that promote walking or biking over driving. These include open streets or ciclovías, where streets are closed down to motor vehicle traffic and opened to cyclists and pedestrians. Philadelphia occasionally does this on stretches of 18th Street and Walnut Street in Center City.
Increasing parking fees can also reduce traffic congestion. Parking fees generally do not reflect the true cost of driving in cities, which includes maintaining parking spaces and infrastructure. The low cost of parking is essentially a subsidy to drivers. While there are fears that reduced parking hurts business owners, substantial evidence indicates businesses benefit from increased foot and bicycle traffic.
The city could also reduce the number of parking spaces and implement congestion pricing, which involves charging fees to drive in certain areas of a city to reduce traffic congestion.
This may be a challenge, considering the recent experience of New York City, which spent decades preparing for congestion pricing only to have it blocked by the governor, though it seems it now has a chance of being implemented. How much success New York has with congestion pricing will likely determine the feasibility in Philadelphia and other U.S. cities.
Improve public transportation
Expanding public transportation and lowering or eliminating fares can also help protect pedestrians and cyclists by reducing car use. I believe these measures could help ensure the other policies mentioned above are effective.
However, Philadelphia’s public transportation is currently in a critical state. Facing funding shortfalls due to years of declining ridership, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority has proposed service cuts and significant fare increases beginning Jan. 1, 2025. Gov. Josh Shapiro has spared the system from these cuts for now by flexing federal highway funds, but long-term solutions are needed to ensure the survival and revival of public transportation in Philadelphia.
Addressing gun violence, drug use and other crimes may also make public transportation in Philadelphia safer and more attractive. While violent crimes on Philadelphia’s public transportation have dropped dramatically in 2024, four people have lost their lives on SEPTA vehicles so far this year.
Collect better data
Considering the increase in road traffic deaths in Philly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, substantial efforts are needed to reach the city’s Vision Zero goal of reducing road traffic deaths to zero by 2030.
In my view, this includes better data on transportation use and which interventions and policies are working and which are not.
Road safety surveillance could be improved in Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania by linking crash records to other data, such as hospital and clinical data of crash victims, as well as insurance costs to better understand the burden of road traffic injuries on the city and the state.
Data is also key to ensuring public policies are implemented equitably. The Vision Zero plan includes a focus on lower-income neighborhoods and those with higher proportions of racial and ethnic minorities. Those areas have three times as many serious injuries and deaths as other neighborhoods, and road traffic injury and deaths rates are 30% higher among people of color compared with white residents.

Mysterious Lights Over Oregon: Pilots Report Unusual Aerial Phenomena
This past weekend, the skies of Oregon became the backdrop for an extraordinary event that has both puzzled and dazzled observers. At least four commercial pilots reported encountering unexplained bright lights displaying incredible speeds and erratic movements, renewing interest and debate about aerial phenomena.
The Encounter Details
The first report came from a pilot operating an air ambulance who described a startling experience. A bright, red light zoomed towards his Life Flight plane, only to reverse direction and head back towards the Pacific Ocean at bewildering speeds. The event left the pilot and his crew astounded by the light’s velocity and abrupt maneuvers.
Meanwhile, the pilot of a United Airlines flight over Eugene also reported seeing multiple mysterious objects. These unidentified lights moved vertically and horizontally in patterns that defied easy explanation, with no evidence of military activity in the area at the time.
Adding to the intrigue, the Life Flight pilot noted that one of the lights engaged in a corkscrew pattern, an observation that was corroborated by the aircraft’s collision avoidance system. Air traffic control, maintaining a cautious approach, authorized the pilot to maneuver as necessary to maintain safety.

Visual Evidence and Continued Sightings
Throughout these encounters, several pilots managed to capture brief video clips. These clips, although hard to discern due to the dark conditions, show glimpses of the unusual red, circular lights. Another report from two Horizon Airlines pilots further confirmed that whatever was out there wasn’t isolated to a single incident or observer.
Experts Weigh In: Possible Explanations
In the wake of these mystifying sightings, experts have been quick to offer explanations. Douglas Buettner, a scientist who has researched similar incidents, suggests that these lights could likely be flares from Starlink satellites. Starlink, a constellation designed by SpaceX to provide global broadband coverage, has been known to produce vivid optical flares when its panels reflect sunlight.
Buettner’s research, which includes previous pilot reports and observations, supports the idea that this natural reflection of sunlight could explain the phenomena observed. However, he also admits the current data is insufficient to conclusively rule out other possibilities.
Government and Public Response
Following these reports, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the sighting of unidentified lights by a pilot, although they have not commented further. In a recent Senate hearing, the Pentagon’s director overseeing unidentified anomalous phenomena indicated a spike in such reports since the launch of satellite constellations like Starlink, underscoring the growing interest and concern regarding these observations.
The Broader Implications
While the most likely explanation for these mysterious lights points to satellite flares, the repeated occurrences of such phenomena continue to stir the public’s imagination and scientific curiosity. As we advance in our technological capabilities, the skies above us grow increasingly populated with human-made objects that can sometimes return to us as bewildering spectacles.
In either case, these events serve as a reminder of the vast and unexplored frontiers above us and the ever-present human quest for understanding the mysteries of our universe. Whether they turn out to be mundane or truly otherworldly, the skies over Oregon this weekend have given us all something to ponder and marvel at.
