Tampa Bay prepares to host elite international competition benefiting Shriners Children’s
The Tampa Bay area is gearing up for one of the most exciting events in senior professional golf. From December 4-7, Feather Sound Country Club in Clearwater will host the Skechers World Champions Cup supporting Shriners Children’s, and the rosters announced this week are nothing short of spectacular.
Skechers World Champions Cup: A Tournament with Serious Pedigree
When you combine 217 tournament wins, 43 major championships, and 89 Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup appearances, you know you’re looking at something special. That’s exactly what captains Jim Furyk (Team USA), Mike Weir (Team International), and Darren Clarke (Team Europe) have assembled for this second edition of the PGA TOUR Champions global team competition.
This isn’t just another golf tournament—it’s a Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup-inspired showdown where international pride and bragging rights are on the line.
Team USA: Defending Champions Ready to Repeat
Captain Jim Furyk isn’t mincing words about his squad’s chances. “I think we have the type of team that can repeat as champions of this event,” he said, and looking at his roster, it’s hard to argue.
The Team USA Lineup:
- Jim Furyk (Playing Captain) – The 2003 U.S. Open champion and owner of the lowest round in PGA TOUR history (that incredible 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship)
- Stewart Cink – Currently second in the Charles Schwab Cup standings with two wins this season
- Jerry Kelly – A standout performer in the 2023 event who led all players with 61 total points
- Justin Leonard – The hero of the 1999 Ryder Cup comeback at Brookline
- Steve Stricker – An 18-time PGA TOUR Champions winner with seven major championships
The team’s sixth spot will be determined by the Charles Schwab Cup standings, with Doug Barron and Jason Caron battling for the position.
Team International: New Captain, Proven Winners
Mike Weir takes the captain’s chair for Team International, bringing his 2024 Presidents Cup captaining experience to the role—this time as a playing captain.
The Team International Lineup:
- Mike Weir (Playing Captain) – Canada’s only men’s major champion (2003 Masters)
- Steven Alker – Leading the tour with 15 top-10 finishes this season
- Ángel Cabrera – The two-time major champion (2007 U.S. Open, 2009 Masters) who’s won twice this season
- K.J. Choi – Eight-time PGA TOUR winner including the 2011 PLAYERS Championship
- Y.E. Yang – Famous for beating Tiger Woods at the 2009 PGA Championship
Mark Hensby and Ricardo Gonzalez are competing for the final roster spot.
Team Europe: Experience and Dominance
Darren Clarke returns as Team Europe’s captain with a roster that includes the greatest player in PGA TOUR Champions history.
The Team Europe Lineup:
- Darren Clarke (Playing Captain) – The 2011 Open Championship winner
- Miguel Angel Jiménez – Leading the 2025 Charles Schwab Cup standings with four wins this season
- Bernhard Langer – The legendary 47-time PGA TOUR Champions winner with 12 major championships
- Thomas Bjørn – Already a two-time winner this season in his PGA TOUR Champions debut year
- Colin Montgomerie – The Ryder Cup icon and World Golf Hall of Famer
Alex Cejka, Søren Kjeldsen, and Freddie Jacobson are vying for Europe’s final spot.
More Than Just Golf
The tournament’s partnership with Shriners Children’s adds meaningful purpose to the competition. Shriners Children’s provides specialized care for orthopedic conditions, burn injuries, cleft lip and palate, and more—regardless of families’ ability to pay. The organization’s commitment to improving children’s lives makes this event about more than just birdies and eagles.
Skechers, the title sponsor and official shoe of the event, brings its comfort technology expertise to support both the players and the cause.
The Venue
Feather Sound Country Club provides a championship-caliber backdrop for this elite competition. The course stretches an impressive 7,332 yards with a par of 72, offering stunning scenery and meticulously maintained greens that will challenge even these legendary players.
How to Watch
Can’t make it to Clearwater? No problem. The tournament will air on ABC and ESPN, so fans can cheer on their favorite teams from anywhere.
