An Exploration into the Frontiers of Food Systems in Space

This August, NASA beckons you to join a pivotal event combining the ingenuity of space exploration with revolutionary food technology. Scheduled for August 16, 2023, at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center in Columbus, Ohio, the Deep Space Food Challenge symposium and winners’ announcement promises to be a watershed moment in space exploration and sustainable food production.

Background of the Deep Space Food Challenge

Initiated in 2019 by NASA in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), this international competition aims to develop sustainable food systems for long-duration missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. With over 300 teams from 32 countries participating since Phase 1 commenced in 2021, the challenge has been a hotbed of groundbreaking ideas and international teamwork.

What to Expect at the Finale

On August 16, the spotlight will fall on the brilliant Phase 3 finalists as they showcase their sustainable, regenerative food production systems. NASA will unveil the winners, rewarding collective efforts with up to $1.5 million in prizes, culminating in a $3 million total prize allocation over the three years of competition.

Kim Krome-Sieja, acting program manager at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, highlights the terrestrial benefits of this challenge, noting that “solutions from this challenge could enable new avenues for food production around the world, especially in extreme environments and resource-scarce regions.”

Special Events and Features

For those who join a day earlier on August 15, exclusive activities including private tours, networking opportunities, knowledge sharing, and culinary experiences await. Interested media representatives need to RSVP by August 12.

The event will also offer a chance to meet the “Simunauts”—a group of Ohio State students who operated these pioneering technologies during an eight-week test phase. Furthermore, attendees can enjoy panel discussions, meet and greets with the finalists, and live demonstrations of the cutting-edge food technologies developed.

Implications for Space and Earth

As emphasized by Angela Herblet, challenge manager, this event not only celebrates advancements in space nutrition but also underscores our leaps toward “creating sustainable, regenerative food production systems.”

Amy Kaminski, program executive for NASA’s Prizes, Challenges, and Crowdsourcing, eagerly articulates her anticipation for the event, recognizing the persistent efforts of the finalists over the past three years. She reflects on the potential impacts these innovations may have on deep space missions and even here on Earth.
