Alef Aeronautics’ Flying Car Moves From Certification to Real-World Testing
SAN MATEO, Calif. — Breaking through boundaries and defying conventional norms, Alef Aeronautics has achieved a remarkable feat in sustainable mobility. The company’s revolutionary flying car, the Model A, continues to make headlines after receiving a prestigious Special Airworthiness Certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), making it the first vehicle of its kind to be legally approved for test flights by the U.S. government.
Now, Alef has taken another critical step forward: real-world testing operations at Half Moon Bay and Hollister airports in Silicon Valley. These test operations demonstrate not only vertical takeoff and landing, but also full integration of driving, takeoff, forward flight, landing, and ground maneuvering — a major milestone in blending automotive and aviation capabilities.
A Marvel of Hybrid Engineering
The Alef Model A is fully electric, road-drivable, and designed for vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL). It features a unique sideways-tilt flight mode, transforming the car into a box-wing biplane once airborne.
Ground Range: ~200 miles
Flight Range: ~110 miles
Capacity: 1 driver + 1 passenger
While most competitors like Joby, Archer, and Lilium are developing air taxi services, Alef is targeting personal ownership — aiming to provide individuals with the ability to drive short distances and take off when needed.

Regulatory Path & Limitations
The FAA’s Special Airworthiness Certificate is a limited approval, allowing experimental flights under specific conditions. Everyday consumer use is still restricted.
In addition, the Model A faces some regulatory challenges:
To fly it, operators must hold a Private Pilot’s License (PPL) or higher, which requires a minimum of 40 flight hours and costs $10,000–$20,000.
On the road, it is classified as a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV), limiting its driving speed to 25 mph. This means it is more practical for short commutes to designated launch sites than as a full replacement for a conventional car.
Production Timeline & Pre-Orders
Alef has opened pre-orders for the Model A, priced at approximately $300,000, with refundable deposits available. Production is targeted to begin by 2026, as the company scales up from prototype to commercial availability.
Industry Impact
The FAA’s recognition of Alef’s Model A highlights the growing effort to establish policies for eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) vehicles, ensuring safe integration with ground and air infrastructure. While range and regulatory hurdles remain, Alef’s progress represents a bold step toward making sustainable personal flying cars a reality.
Since emerging from stealth mode in October 2022, Alef has captured the imagination of individuals and companies alike, garnering strong pre-orders and significant media attention. Led by CEO Jim Dukhovny, the Palo Alto-based company, founded in 2015, remains at the forefront of this new era in mobility.
