CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 21, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Recognized leader in contract foodservice management Chartwells Higher Education has announced United Table, a new dining experience focused on global flavors. Students at Northeastern University and the University of Illinois Chicago are the first to experience United Table’s bold, modern dining experience that celebrates the stories of cultures, cuisines, and people around the world through authentic dishes, ingredients, and cooking techniques.

Research from the Institute of International Education (IIE) shows international student enrollment in higher education is on the rise. According to IIE’s Fall 2022 Snapshot on International Student Enrollment, the number of new international students enrolled at U.S. institutions increased by 7% last year, building on the 80% rebound in new enrollments during the previous academic year. With United Table, Chartwells is creating a tailored dining location that not only meets the needs and wants of international students but opens the door for all students to experience new cultures through food.

“There’s something special about sharing a meal with friends, family, and even people you’ve never met before, which is why we’re always looking to create food-forward initiatives that bring students together,” said Lisa McEuen, CEO of Chartwells Higher Education. “We hope United Tables gives international students a taste of home while also encouraging others to engage with new cultures, people, and foods and ultimately create more meaningful interactions with one another.”

Chartwells’ culinarians conducted extensive market research and taste tests to create the United Table’s special menu, which features a variety of concepts and recipes such as:

  • Asian kitchens featuring Korean fried chicken, pulled pork banh mi, and chicken biryani
  • Mediterranean kitchens featuring Turkish ezme salad, beef shawarma, and shatta chicken
  • Latin kitchens featuring birria tacos, Jamaican jerk chicken, and arepas
  • Global breakfast options featuring English breakfast, calentado, and Japanese fluffy pancakes

“As an international student, when you’re away from home, food is something that you really miss because its flavors take you back to happy memories of where you grew up,” says a third-year Northeastern student from Greece. “It’s been a challenge to find traditional foods in the States so it’s a very comforting feeling to be able to come to the dining hall and have something that takes you back to home and makes you feel comfortable.”

Embracing Kindness in a Sea of Rudeness: Reflections from a Store in Arizona

Navigating encounters with rudeness reminds us to embrace kindness and patience, focusing on the positive experiences in a store in Lake Pleasant.

Published

Working in a store in the bustling Lake Pleasant area of Arizona has its fair share of interesting encounters. While most customers we interact with throughout the week are pleasant and cordial, there are always a few who carry an unwarranted air of superiority. In this blog post, I want to share a memorable encounter I had with a customer and the lessons it taught me about embracing kindness in the face of rudeness.

The Profanity-Laden Encounter:
One day, while working in the warehouse, I crossed paths with a woman who was evidently irritated by a delayed beer delivery. As I approached her with a simple question about the shipment, I was met with a response littered with profanities. Her disrespect took me by surprise, and I couldn’t help but wonder how a supposedly professional individual could behave in such an offensive manner. Instead of handling the situation with grace, she chose to respond with “Not my job” and continued her rude behavior.

Finding Empathy Amidst Busyness:
Understanding her busyness and the juggling act professionals often face, I tried to empathize with her situation. However, what bothered me most wasn’t her lack of time but her complete lack of empathy and unwillingness to direct me to someone who could assist. It was clear that her words were a reflection of her character rather than an impulsive outburst.

The Power of Redirection:
In retrospect, I realized how much better the situation could have been handled. A simple redirection to a person better equipped to handle the beer delivery inquiry would have sufficed. By refusing to offer any assistance, she wielded her authority in an unprofessional and offensive manner, leaving a sour taste in my mouth.

Choosing Positivity and Learning:
Encounters like these serve as a reminder that despite the majority of kind-hearted individuals in the world, there will always be a few who choose to ignore common courtesy. However, instead of dwelling on negative experiences, it is crucial to focus on the positive encounters and the lessons we learn. Every encounter serves as an opportunity for growth and maintaining a positive outlook.

Embrace Kindness and Empathy:
As I continue my work at the store in Lake Pleasant, this encounter serves as a gentle nudge to approach each new interaction with patience and understanding. It reminds me to embrace and appreciate the kindness that most people have to offer, despite the occasional encounter with rudeness.

Working in customer service at a store in the Lake Pleasant area of Arizona brings its share of interesting encounters, both pleasant and not-so-pleasant. The encounter with a rude and unprofessional customer reminded me of the importance of approaching each interaction with patience and understanding. By embracing kindness and empathy, we can strive for a more harmonious work environment and focus on the positive experiences we encounter. So, let us choose to uplift one another, even amidst the occasional encounters with unkindness.

By exploring new hardware and manufacturing processes for high-quality optical fibers in space, it shattered previous records, drawing more than half a mile of fiber in just one day.

Another striking study travelling aboard Dragon is GEARS (Genomic Enumeration of Antibiotic Resistance in Space), which surveys the space station for antibiotic-resistant organisms. By analyzing genetic data, scientists aim to understand how these bacteria adapt to space, providing insights to protect future astronauts on long-duration missions.

MISSE-18 (Materials International Space Station Experiment-18-NASA) is yet another exciting experiment coming back to Earth. It examines the performance and durability of materials and components when exposed to the harsh environment of space. Coatings, quantum dots, a lunar regolith simulant composite, and other materials are studied to enhance our understanding of their behavior in space conditions.

Additionally, the Immune Cell Activation experiment, sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA), promises fascinating results. It investigates whether microgravity affects the incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles into immune and melanoma cells. The outcomes of this research could contribute to the development of novel therapeutics targeting central nervous system diseases and skin cancers such as melanoma.

Future Implications:
These returning experiments represent only a fraction of the hundreds of ongoing investigations aboard the International Space Station. Ranging across biology and biotechnology, physical sciences, and Earth and space science, these studies are crucial for astronaut health during long-duration space travel. They also serve as critical stepping stones towards NASA’s Artemis campaign, ensuring the advancement of human and robotic exploration beyond low Earth orbit – ultimately leading us to the Moon and Mars.

The impending departure of the SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft from the International Space Station promises an exhilarating journey back to Earth. With an array of scientific research samples and hardware aboard, the Dragon’s return holds tremendous scientific significance. Thanks to NASA’s dedicated coverage, you can witness this extraordinary milestone through various platforms. As we eagerly await the spacecraft’s splashdown off Florida’s coast, let’s celebrate the accomplishments and look forward to the groundbreaking discoveries that lie ahead.
