Adventure-ready Nissan Ariya unveiled for epic Pole to Pole expedition
Husband and wife team take on world-first electric adventure to showcase the capability of EV’s and highlight positive action against the climate crisis
REYKJAVIK, Iceland – Set amongst Arctic-like conditions, the Pole to Pole expedition team and Nissan today unveiled an adventure-ready version of the new Ariya electric SUV, which will undertake a 27,000km trip from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole.
During this epic adventure aiming to kick off this March, the Ariya will need to cope with breath-taking but extreme terrains and environments, including ice fields, deep snow, steep mountain climbs and inhospitable desert dunes. Arctic Trucks, specialists in polar expedition vehicles, have collaborated with Nissan design and engineering teams to prepare the Ariya for these tough conditions.
Modifications to the car have been intentionally minimal, with no changes to the battery or powertrain, but the most recognisable difference is the adaption of the suspension and addition of 39-inch tyres. When coupled with e-4ORCE, Nissan’s advanced electric all-wheel-control technology, these modifications will enable the expedition car to tackle extreme terrains whilst giving Chris and Julie the necessary comfort and control to reach the South Pole.
Chris Ramsey, Pole to Pole EV Expedition Leader, commented: “One of the things that underpins all the adventures we do is that we take a standard production EV and aim to make minimal changes to clearly demonstrate its real, everyday capabilities, regardless of where you are driving it. Our Nissan Ariya is no different as the vehicle’s drivetrain and battery has remained factory standard, demonstrating just how capable and versatile the production Ariya is. We’ve modified the suspension and widened the wheel arches so we can benefit from the stable platform and support of the 39-inch BF Goodrich tyres. I’m incredibly excited to get behind the wheel of what was already a brilliant vehicle, but now feels equipped to take on the ends of the earth in style!”
As a self-confessed coffee lover, Chris will have access to a specially integrated espresso machine with a good supply of sustainable coffee. Whilst the on-demand caffeine will help him focus on the long and isolated parts of the journey, Chris can also capture the beauty of these spectacular environments using a drone that can launch directly from the utility unit on the roof. One further innovation is the portable, renewable energy unit that will be used to charge the Ariya in the polar regions. The towable prototype includes a packable, lightweight wind turbine and solar panels that will take advantage of high winds and long daylight hours to provide charge for the EV’s battery when Chris and Julie stop to rest.
Julie Ramsey, co-driver on Pole to Pole, commented: “The planning and preparation for Pole to Pole has been such a big part of our lives over the past four years so I am really looking forward to getting the expedition underway in March. We’re going to discover so many interesting initiatives from communities and individuals who are taking positive action against climate change and I’m looking forward to sharing these experiences and stories with everyone. We are doing something that has never been attempted before, a world-first, and ultimately that is what makes it so exciting.”

Take On Spring Road Trips
Get your vehicle ready for smooth spring drives with these top tips. From cleaning to tire checks, don’t miss out on essential maintenance.
5 tips to keep vehicles running smoothly
(Family Features) With the windows down and nothing but open road visible through the windshield, spring days often bring out the best driving conditions. When it’s time to hit the pavement, make sure your ride is in tip-top shape following a winter of snow, salt and sand.
Give a Thorough Clean
All that winter buildup can lead to grime both inside and outside your vehicle. A deep clean including the undercarriage, engine bay and obvious areas like doors and windows can help eliminate salt buildup. Give the interior a scrub as well to get rid of trash, dirt, debris and unnecessary items that may be weighing down your car and hurting its fuel efficiency. Plus, that clean look and smell can make road trips that much more enjoyable.
Check (or Change) the Tires
Changing air temperatures can lead to fluctuations in tire pressure. As the weather warms, be sure to check tire pressure frequently to avoid overinflation that leads to wear. It’s also an opportunity to check tread depth as it may be time for new tires altogether.
Change the Oil
While most experts recommend oil changes every 5,000 miles or so, depending on the age of your vehicle, a spring auto checklist isn’t complete without checking (and possibly changing) the oil. Fresh oil keeps engines running as intended, and by changing oil in the spring, you can help ensure you’re ready to hit the road for most – or all – of spring and summer.
Test the Wiper Blades
In many parts of the country, spring means rain. Ensuring wiper blades are ready to take on weather ranging from sprinkles to downpours is practical for maximizing safety on the road. Cold weather and ice can cause cracking on worn out wipers, which makes spring a perfect time to assess winter’s damage.
Consider a Professional Inspection
If it’s been a while since your vehicle was properly inspected, now may be a good time to have a professional take a look under the hood. Wiper blades and tire pressure are easy for many car owners to handle, but alignment, suspension, brakes and other key elements of vehicle safety and efficiency are often best left to those with trained eyes. Letting a certified mechanic assess your ride is a perfect way to ensure you’re ready for the open road.

Nissan’s Potential Move of Rogue Production Spells Trouble for Tennessee Factory
Nissan’s potential move of Rogue production to Japan spells trouble for its Tennessee factory and US operations.
Nissan’s potential decision to relocate the production of the fourth-generation Rogue to Kyushu, Japan, could have significant implications for its Tennessee-based operations. The Japanese automaker has communicated to suppliers its intention to achieve a “significant reduction” in parts pricing when the next-generation crossover enters production in 2026. This move comes as Nissan seeks to cut costs, with reports indicating that the company has asked suppliers to reduce the cost of parts by an average of 20%, with some suppliers being asked for reductions of up to 30%.
The Smyrna, Tennessee-built Rogue holds a crucial position as Nissan’s best-selling model in the American market. With around 6,700 workers, the Smyrna facility heavily relies on the production of the Rogue, as approximately 40% of the factory’s output comprises this model. The potential relocation of Rogue production to Japan could leave the Tennessee plant in a vulnerable position, especially considering the impending cessation of production for the Nissan Leaf, another key model produced at the facility.
Moreover, the move could be influenced by the company’s efforts to reduce costs amidst potential increases in operational expenses, possibly linked to unionization efforts. Industry analysts have expressed surprise at the magnitude of the price reduction being sought and the potential threat of moving an entire vehicle’s production to another country. This decision could have far-reaching consequences, as it may not only impact the Tennessee factory but also affect Nissan’s broader operations in the United States.
As the automaker evaluates revised quotations for the new Rogue, a decision is expected to be made in February. However, industry experts believe that if Nissan proceeds with moving Rogue production to Japan, it could spell financial trouble for Nissan USA, potentially leading to the closure of a plant. The outcome of this decision is crucial not only for Nissan but also for the future landscape of automotive manufacturing in the United States.
Stay tuned for updates as Nissan executives prepare to make their final decision on the fate of the Rogue’s production.
