Acknowledging The Founders Of The Game In The Pickleball Capital
Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It originated in the Seattle area in the 1960s and has since spread across the United States and beyond, attracting players of all ages and skill levels. One of the latest developments in pickleball is the formation of the National Pickleball League (NPL), a franchise-based league that aims to revolutionize the sport and create new opportunities for players, fans, and investors.
JBB UNITED is the first team in the NPL and is owned by Bob Strommer, a longtime pickleball enthusiast who has played, coached, and promoted the game for years. Bob is excited about the potential of the NPL to elevate pickleball to a new level of professionalism, entertainment, and accessibility. He is also proud to be part of the pickleball community in the Pickleball Capital, a region that has a rich history and culture of the sport.
The Pickleball Capital is a term that refers to the Sarasota-Bradenton area in Florida, where many top pickleball players, tournaments, and facilities are located. The Pickleball Capital is also home to the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA), the governing body of the sport in the United States, and the Pickleball Hall of Fame, which honors the pioneers and champions of the game. Some of the founders of pickleball, such as Joel Pritchard, Barney McCallum, and Bill Bell, have ties to the Pickleball Capital, and their legacy is celebrated by the local pickleball community.
Bob recognizes the importance of acknowledging the founders of the game and their contributions to the sport. The NPL is poised to start its inaugural season in the fall of 2023, with six teams competing for a total prize pool of $10 million.
