Clinical Trials Expand Patients’ Treatment Options

Clinical trials play a crucial role in developing effective treatments for chronic health conditions. They evaluate safety and efficacy, but low enrollment delays drug approvals, limiting patient options.

Clinical Trials

(Family Features) For health conditions with no cure, effective treatments are the next best option. However, in order to make medical interventions including new drugs, devices, vaccines and lifestyle modifications available, they must undergo a thorough evaluation process to demonstrate their benefits.

Clinical trials are an important part of this process because they provide data for researchers on the effectiveness of various treatments and interventions. However, many myths about clinical trials deter people from enrolling. In fact, more than 70% of clinical trials are delayed at least one month due to unfulfilled enrollment, according to the “Journal of Medical Internet Research.”

Delays create barriers to the drug approval process and result in fewer available treatments for chronic conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The experts at the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation offer these facts about the importance of clinical trials:

  1. More patients can benefit from clinical trials While hundreds of participants may take part in a trial, the results can lead to new care and treatment options for an entire patient community.

  2. Clinical trials lead to better and improved medications. For a new treatment to be approved, it needs to demonstrate a meaningful benefit to patients, such as improved outcomes, treating a wider range of symptoms, fewer side effects or more convenience for patients.

  3. They provide information. Clinical trials provide evidence of a treatment’s effectiveness and safety that can be used to guide patient care.

  4. Trials test safety and efficacy. Clinical trials are conducted in four phases. During the first phase, the main objective is to assess the safety of a new treatment. Experimental treatments only advance to the next stages if they pass certain safety and efficacy standards
    .
  5. They help prevent bias. In a randomized controlled trial, the effects of treatment with a new drug are compared with that of a control group – either a placebo (a treatment that looks identical to the new drug but contains no active medicine) or the current standard of care. Treatment assignments are “randomized,” which means neither the trial doctors nor the participants choose which treatment each participant will receive.

How Clinical Trials Work
Before a clinical trial begins, a research team develops a clinical trial protocol. This is the research plan that describes who can join the trial, which treatments the participants will receive, what questions the researchers will try to answer, how long the trial will last and how participant privacy and safety will be protected.

Conducting clinical research relies on volunteer trial participants. Those interested in joining a clinical trial meet with clinical research professionals to discuss the trial, treatments, eligibility requirements and expectations.

Joining a Trial
If you are interested in participating in a clinical trial, do some research. Your doctor may not be aware of or proactively tell you about trials you may be eligible to join. If you find a clinical trial you may be interested in joining, discuss the trial with your doctor and other health care professionals on your research team.

Foundations supporting chronic conditions can be a good source of information. For example, you can learn more about trials affecting individuals with inflammatory bowel disease by exploring the Clinical Trials Community at crohnscolitisfoundation.org.

Better Sleep While Traveling: How to make rest a priority while on the road

(Family Features) From crossing time zones to adjusting to new surroundings, getting quality sleep while traveling can be a challenge. Whether traveling for business or leisure, between long flights and packed itineraries, travelers often struggle to get the rest they need to wake up refreshed.

Sleep plays a vital role in supporting both physical and mental health, mood and overall resilience. Making a few simple choices can set the stage for deeper, more restorative sleep that supports overall wellbeing.

Pack Your Comfort Cues
Travel can disrupt routines, which may affect both sleep and mental wellbeing. Bringing small reminders of home that signal bedtime, such as an eye mask, cozy socks or a familiar scent, can help ease the mind, reduce stress and settle into a new environment. If you forget these items, select hotels offer dedicated sleep kits available for guests to add-on to their stay, including items like herbal tea, aromatherapy roll-ons and more. Simple rituals like these can reduce travel-related stress and support both relaxation and peace of mind.

Keep a Consistent Rhythm
Disrupted sleep patterns can impact mood, focus and clarity, making it harder to fully enjoy a trip or perform well while on the road. Maintaining steady bed and wake times, even when traveling, can help stabilize both your body clock and mental state. Dimming the lights before bed, putting away screens and practicing mindfulness can help your body and mind recognize when it’s time to rest.

Unwind with Soothing Sounds
Sometimes the quickest way to calm the mind is through relaxing audio. Across more than 450 participating Hyatt hotels, guests can enjoy exclusive access to five Sleepcasts on in-room TVs, created by Headspace with travelers in mind. Each 45-minute track is inspired by a unique destination and theme, such as tropical serenity at Alila Villas Uluwatu, island twilight at Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa or misty mountain at Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono. These immersive story-based audio journeys blend gentle narration with ambient soundscapes, designed to help travelers release tension, quiet busy thoughts and drift into healthy, restful sleep.

Look for Rest-Ready Stays
Not all hotel rooms are designed the same. If you struggle to sleep well while on the road, look for accommodations that tailor guestrooms with sleep in mind, such as customized sleep suites with extras like pillow menus, blackout curtains or responsive beds that adapt to individual sleep patterns. Choosing accommodations that put wellbeing at the forefront can help ensure a more balanced, restful experience while away from home.

Tap into Wellbeing Resources
Some hotels are expanding offerings to help travelers get quality rest and support their mental wellbeing. Many provide complimentary in-room or digital tools you can access on your phone. Travelers can also prepare ahead of a trip with resources like Hyatt and Headspace’s science-backed sleep series, available on the World of Hyatt app and at participating hotels, offering sleep tips for pre-, during and post-trip.

For a more immersive experience, wellbeing resorts such as Miraval provide dreamwork and sleep science coaches who offer personalized strategies to cultivate deeper and more restorative sleep. These resources not only support healthy sleep but also promote relaxation and help travelers return home feeling more refreshed.

Whether you are traveling for leisure, business or a mix of both, getting a good night’s rest is essential to making the most of your trip. Visit Hyatt.com to explore more ways to relax, recharge and care for your wellbeing while on the road.

5 Health Benefits of Whole Milk for Kids

5 Health Benefits of Whole Milk for Kids

(Family Features) Forget the outdated nutrition advice that told parents to skip whole milk. A growing body of research is turning that idea on its head, making it time to rethink what “healthy” means for growing kids. For decades, families have been told low-fat milk is the best choice once children turn 2. However, those recommendations were largely based on data from adults, not children. Today’s evidence paints a different picture – one where whole milk supports kids’ growth, development and long-term health. “Parents are often surprised to learn whole milk isn’t just safe – it’s beneficial,” said Jaclyn London, MS, RD, CDN, nutrition consultant and spokesperson for Dairy Farmers of America. “When we look at the latest research, whole milk provides the high-quality protein, healthy fats and essential nutrients kids need during key stages of development – without increasing risk for obesity or heart disease.” With 13 essential nutrients and vitamins – including calcium, vitamin D and protein – real dairy milk is a simple, nutrient-dense staple. It’s also an easy addition to family favorites like Breakfast Cookies and Homemade Cream of Tomato Soup. Here are five research-backed reasons to feel confident about choosing whole milk. Whole milk is not associated with higher obesity rates. Multiple large-scale studies from “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,” the “International Journal of Obesity” and “Preventive Medicine Reports” show children who drink whole milk have lower or similar body fat levels compared to those drinking reduced-fat milk. Whole milk does not increase risk of heart disease. According to “Advances in Nutrition,” whole milk does not increase cardiometabolic risk in kids; in fact, it’s associated with better vitamin D levels with no adverse effects on cholesterol or glucose. It’s nutrient-dense and supports optimal growth. All types of milk, including whole, provide essential nutrients like calcium, protein and vitamins A and D – all critical for bone development and healthy growth in children, per “Nutrition Research Reviews.” Kids like the taste – and that matters. Children often prefer the taste of whole milk over low-fat versions, according to the “Journal of Dairy Science,” which can lead to more consistent consumption. Adults may benefit, too. Among adults, full-fat dairy is associated with greater satiety, improved blood sugar regulation and a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome, according to a study published in “Nutrition & Metabolism,” helping reframe full-fat dairy as part of a balanced diet. Give Your Skin a Seasonal Glow with Winter Care Tips

Published

Last Updated on November 15, 2025 by Daily News Staff

17700 detail image

(Family Features) As your sun-kissed glow gives way to crisp winter air, your skin may start to feel the effects of cooler, drier weather. Yet, with the right care, it’s possible to maintain that healthy, luminous look all season long.

Winter skin care isn’t about adding complexity – it’s about preserving hydration, protecting the barrier and choosing products that nurture instead of strip. Rooted in the century-old European tradition of natural botanical skin care, the experts at Herbacin aim to show that radiant skin is achievable year-round with just a few mindful adjustments to your daily routine.

17700 detail embed1

Skip Long, Hot Showers
A steaming shower may feel heavenly on a chilly morning, but the heat can actually pull moisture from your skin. To keep your complexion balanced, choose warm (not hot) water and limit shower time. Gentle cleansing helps maintain the skin’s natural oils, which are vital for keeping dryness and irritation at bay.

17700 detail embed3

Lock In Moisture Immediately
After showering, pat skin lightly with a towel and apply lotion while it’s still slightly damp. This simple step helps trap water before it evaporates. Look for a lightweight, fast-absorbing formula enriched with natural emollients. A trusted choice like Herbacin Daily Moisturizing Lotion combines nourishing jojoba oil and shea butter to soften and hydrate. Aloe vera and chamomile calm irritation while leaving a light, refreshing scent. Suitable for all skin types, it delivers lasting softness without any greasy feel – perfect for daily use from head to toe.

Ease Up on Exfoliation
When your skin feels rough or flaky, it’s tempting to exfoliate frequently. However, over-exfoliating can remove the skin’s protective barrier and worsen dryness. Instead, use a gentle scrub or enzymatic exfoliant no more than once or twice a week and always follow with moisturizer to soothe and restore balance.

17700 detail embed4

Layer for Maximum Hydration
Layering products allows each formula to do its job effectively. Start with the thinnest, most water-based product – such as a hydrating serum or lightweight moisturizer – and finish with a richer cream to seal it all in. For a deep-moisture boost, try Herbacin Skin Solutions Daily Skin Moisturizer, formulated with a hydro-boosting complex featuring hyaluronic acid, myo-inositol and fucose biopolymer. This quick-absorbing, silky-soft lotion provides long-lasting hydration – up to 24 hours – and helps soothe even sensitive or irritated skin. Plus, its airless dispenser keeps the formula fresh and easy to use.

Choose a Thicker Moisturizer for Extra Protection
Winter’s cold winds and low humidity can weaken your skin’s barrier. A richer, cream-based moisturizer creates a protective layer that locks in moisture and shields against environmental stressors. Even those with oily or combination skin can benefit as the right moisturizer helps balance oil production and prevents dehydration.

Don’t Ditch the Sunscreen
Sun protection isn’t just for summer. Winter UV rays can still damage skin and contribute to premature aging. Apply sunscreen daily to exposed areas, such as your face, neck and hands, especially when spending time outdoors. Reapply as directed for continuous protection.

Add a Little Light
Emerging research supports the benefits of red light therapy, which helps stimulate collagen production and improve circulation. The result is firmer, more resilient skin that holds moisture better and appears more radiant.

Keep the Air Comfortable
Indoor heating can sap moisture from the air – and your skin. Maintaining an indoor humidity level between 30-50% supports not only skin health but also respiratory comfort. If your home’s air feels overly dry, consider adding a humidifier to your bedroom or main living space.

From a quick morning shower to evening self-care, small daily choices can have a big impact on your skin’s health – no matter how cold it gets outside. Discover more seasonal skin-care tips and explore the full collection at herbacinusa.com.

Stocking Stuffers for Better Skin Care
