The Battle Between Pornhub and State Lawmakers: A Deep Dive into Age Restrictions on Adult Sites

Montana and North Carolina lawmakers enforce age restrictions on Pornhub, leading to a complete ban in these states.

Published

on

In a recent turn of events, Montana and North Carolina lawmakers have successfully pushed for new laws that restrict access to adult content on popular sites like Pornhub. As of January 1st, users in these states are no longer able to access the site, as the platform refused to comply with the new age verification requirements.

The move comes as a response to growing concerns about minors accessing explicit content online. Legislators argue that pornography has a detrimental impact on minors and constitutes a public health crisis. To address these concerns, laws like Montana’s SB 544 and North Carolina’s HB 8 now mandate age verification for individuals attempting to access adult sites.

Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo, has taken a bold stance by completely disabling access to its adult platforms in these states, citing concerns about user privacy and the effectiveness of age verification processes. This decision highlights the ongoing tension between online platforms, lawmakers, and the need to protect vulnerable populations from harmful content.

While these laws aim to shield minors from explicit material, they have also sparked discussions about censorship, privacy, and the role of technology in regulating online content. Users in affected states are now exploring alternative methods, such as VPNs, to bypass these restrictions and access the content they desire.

As the debate around age restrictions on adult sites continues to unfold, it raises important questions about the balance between protecting minors and preserving freedom of expression online. It remains to be seen how other states and online platforms will respond to these evolving regulations and what impact they will have on the future of internet governance.

The clash between Pornhub and state lawmakers serves as a microcosm of the broader challenges facing tech policy in the digital age. As technology continues to shape our online experiences, finding a harmonious solution that safeguards users while upholding individual rights remains a complex and ongoing endeavor.

In reading the article on Gizmodo titled “Pornhub Banned in Montana and North Carolina,” it is evident that the recent legislative changes in these states represent a significant shift in the regulation of adult content online. The article delves into the intricacies of the new laws and highlights the implications for both users and platforms like Pornhub. Gizmodo provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges faced by Aylo, Pornhub’s parent company, in balancing user privacy with compliance to age verification mandates. This coverage places the debate within a broader context of digital rights, privacy concerns, and the varying approaches to internet governance.

What is Pornhub?

Pornhub is a Canadian website for sharing adult videos. It is owned by Aylo, a big company in adult entertainment. As of February 2024, Pornhub is the 13th-most-visited website in the world and the second-most-visited adult website, after XVideos.

The site allows visitors to view and share pornographic videos from various categories, like professional and amateur pornography. Users can flag content that breaks the site’s rules. The site also hosts an annual awards show.

In December 2020, after a New York Times report about non-consensual pornography and sex trafficking, Mastercard and Visa stopped their services to Pornhub. As a result, Pornhub removed all videos from unverified users, reducing the total content from 13 million to 4 million videos. A 2023 documentary, Money Shot: The Pornhub Story, discusses the criticism of Pornhub and the perspectives of some pornographic performers.

Blocking and Banning?

Authorities and organizations worldwide have put in place different measures to limit access to and use of Pornhub.

  • In 2011, European broadband provider TalkTalk faced criticism because its internet filter didn’t block Pornhub for over a week due to child internet safety issues.[4]
  • In January 2013, CBS refused to air a non-explicit Pornhub commercial during the Super Bowl due to legal concerns.
  • In September 2013, Pornhub was blocked in China by the Great Firewall.
  • On March 12, 2014, Russia blocked Pornhub because an actress looked too young, which led some viewers to think she was a minor.
  • In September 2016, Russia blocked the site again for “spreading harmful information to children,” but it was reinstated in April 2017 with age verification measures.
  • In January 2017, the Government of the Philippines blocked Pornhub and other sites due to the Anti-Child Pornography Law.
  • In October 2018, India’s Uttarakhand High Court reinstated a ban on Pornhub but allowed exceptions for sites free of child pornography.
  • In November 2020, Thailand blocked Pornhub and other similar sites.
  • On September 3, 2022, Instagram banned Pornhub’s account indefinitely after lobbying by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation
  • On December 16, 2022, Pornhub’s YouTube account was taken down shortly after being removed from TikTok.
  • In May 2023, Utah passed a law requiring age verification for adult sites, leading Pornhub to block access for Utah users and display a message criticizing the laws.
  • In February 2024, Texas sued Pornhub for allegedly not following the state’s age verification law. As of March 2024, Pornhub and other Aylo-owned sites blocked access in Texas, displaying a message criticizing the laws.

Recent rumors circulating on social media have left many Chipotle fans in a state of panic, with claims that the beloved restaurant chain is filing for bankruptcy and set to close all its locations. Let’s set the record straight and find out what’s really happening.

According to KTLA, the frenzy began when the Union Rayo media outlet published a story on March 20 about the closure of a Chipotle spinoff restaurant called Farmesa Fresh Eatery. Unfortunately, the article mistakenly included a photo of Chipotle, and this misinformation quickly spread like wildfire across social platforms.

Chipotle is famous for its generously-sized burritos, bowls, quesadillas, and tacos, proudly serving organic ingredients at nearly 4,000 locations worldwide. Unsurprisingly, the rumors sent burrito lovers into a frenzy. One social media user expressed disbelief, questioning, “How is Chipotle going bankrupt when I get a bowl with extra chicken and guac every day????”

Amidst the chaos, another user humorously suggested, “They’re talking about Chipotle closing, I’ll chain my wrist to the door don’t play with me,” highlighting the deep connection many have to the restaurant.

In response to the widespread concerns, Chipotle issued a statement to clarify the situation. A spokesperson for the chain told Good Morning America, “The claim that Chipotle is closing restaurants is false. The false information stemmed from an inaccurate online article confusing Chipotle with a venture it tested in 2023. The story has since been corrected.”

Furthermore, as a testament to their growth, Chipotle plans to open 345 new restaurants this year. This expansion clearly indicates that the chain is on solid ground and committed to serving its loyal customers for years to come.

So, if you were worried about your next burrito fix, rest easy! Chipotle is not closing its doors, and the rumors can safely be put to rest. Keep enjoying your favorite meals, and stay tuned for those new locations popping up soon!

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a heartbreaking loss to the entertainment world, Val Kilmer, the intense and versatile actor known for iconic roles in films such as “Top Gun,” “Batman Forever,” and “The Doors,” has passed away at the age of 65. Kilmer died on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family and friends, as confirmed by his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, in an email to The Associated Press.

Kilmer’s death was attributed to pneumonia, following a long and courageous battle with throat cancer that he had been diagnosed with in 2014, a struggle that led to two tracheotomies.

Reflecting on his tumultuous yet inspiring journey, Kilmer shared in the documentary “Val” (2021), “I have behaved poorly. I have behaved bravely. I have behaved bizarrely to some. I deny none of this and have no regrets because I have lost and found parts of myself that I never knew existed. And I am blessed.” His words are a testament to his remarkable resilience, artistry, and unique perspective on life.

Val Kilmer

Kilmer was a prodigy in the performing arts, becoming the youngest actor ever admitted to the prestigious Juilliard School when he enrolled in 1981. His breakthrough came with the 1984 spy spoof “Top Secret!” and he quickly rose to fame with a series of successful films, including the beloved comedy “Real Genius” in 1985. He showcased his comedic talents in later works, such as “MacGruber” and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.”

The pinnacle of Kilmer’s career arguably occurred in the early 1990s, where he solidified his status as a leading man. Among his most memorable roles were Doc Holliday in “Tombstone” (1993), Elvis Presley in “True Romance,” and the cunning bank-robbing demolition expert in Michael Mann’s “Heat” (1995), alongside cinematic legends Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

Despite the acclaim, Kilmer’s career was not without its challenges. A 1996 Entertainment Weekly cover story famously dubbed him “The Man Hollywood Loves to Hate,” citing conflicts with directors and a reputation for being difficult on set. Notable figures, including directors John Frankenheimer and Joel Schumacher, described his work as challenging; however, many others, like director D. J. Caruso, defended Kilmer’s commitment to depth and character immersion.

After delivering memorable performances in adult dramas, Kilmer took a slight detour, engaging in smaller films, such as David Mamet’s “Spartan,” and portraying the troubled 1970s adult film star John Holmes in “Wonderland” (2003). He also embraced the stage with a one-man show, “Citizen Twain,” where he explored the complex life of Mark Twain.

Hailing from the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles, Kilmer’s early life was marred by tragedy with the loss of his younger brother, Wesley, to a seizure — a poignant event that would forever resonate with him. Throughout his life, Kilmer sought inspiration from his brother, often reflecting on the artistic potential he believed Wesley would have achieved.

As a multi-talented artist, Kilmer not only acted but also wrote poetry, with two published collections, including “My Edens After Burns.” In 2012, he received a Grammy nomination for his spoken word album, “The Mark of Zorro.” He continued to explore various creative outlets and was known for his dedication to visual art and his Christian Science faith.

His personal life saw relationships with notable personalities, including singer Cher, and he was previously married to actor Joanne Whalley, with whom he shares two children, Mercedes and Jack.

In a final testament to his remarkable life and career, Kilmer asserted, “I have no regrets. I’ve witnessed and experienced miracles.” Val Kilmer leaves behind a rich legacy, characterized by his complex characters and deep artistic contributions that will forever resonate with audiences. The film industry has lost a true icon, and his presence will be deeply missed.

The Controversy Surrounding the Jackie Robinson Biography at the U.S. Naval Academy

The Trump administration’s push to ban Jackie Robinson’s biography from the U.S. Naval Academy Library highlights tensions over diversity narratives in education, sparking controversy and raising concerns about historical representation amid ongoing political divisiveness.

In an alarming move reflecting ongoing tensions over diverse narratives in education and public discourse, the Trump administration is reportedly pushing to ban a biography of Jackie Robinson from the Nimitz Library at the U.S. Naval Academy. This follows a week of controversy sparked by the temporary removal and subsequent restoration of an article on Robinson’s Army service from the Pentagon’s website.

According to a report from The New York Times, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed the Naval Academy to review its library collection for works that embody themes of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The biography of Robinson, alongside around 900 other titles—including Martin Luther King Jr.’s autobiography and “Einstein on Race and Racism”—has been flagged for removal under this directive.

Cmdr. Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for the Naval Academy, stated, “The U.S. Naval Academy is fully committed to executing and implementing all directives outlined in executive orders issued by the president and is currently reviewing the Nimitz Library collection to ensure compliance. The Navy is carrying out these actions with utmost professionalism, efficiency, and in alignment with national security objectives.”

With Hegseth scheduled to visit the Academy soon, it remains uncertain whether these controversial titles will be removed from the library before his arrival. The issue has sparked substantial outcry, particularly in light of the administration’s recent criticism over removing articles that celebrate influential figures in U.S. history, like Robinson and the Navajo code talkers.

In a discussion prompted by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Pentagon press secretary John Ullyot reiterated the administration’s stance against diversity initiatives, indicating that some content may have been removed inadvertently. His comments drew significant backlash, leading to a follow-up statement emphasizing “patriotism and dedication to the warfighting mission” rather than racial or ethnic identities.

Robinson, a second lieutenant in the Army from 1942 to 1944, served with the 761st Tank Battalion, the first Black tank unit to see combat in World War II. His court-martial for refusing to adhere to a racist bus policy only underscores his enduring struggle against racial injustice, paving the way for his groundbreaking success in Major League Baseball as he broke the color barrier.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, Robinson’s team for a decade, are scheduled to visit President Trump at the White House to celebrate their 2024 World Series title this April, coinciding with Jackie Robinson Day. This timing juxtaposes their celebration of his legacy against the backdrop of an administration taking steps to diminish recognition of such key figures in American history.

As this situation unfolds, it raises critical questions about the role of educational institutions, historical representation, and the importance of equitable narratives in our national dialogue. In today’s divided political landscape, the removal of influential and diverse voices from public access can serve not just as a reflection of current priorities but also as a forewarning about the future of discourse surrounding diversity and inclusion in America.
